Another option is to wait for Apple to release the software for developers to develop official 3rd party apps that would then be available from Apple and also approved I guess. Steve Jobs said they'd release the stuff by the end of Feb so he's only got 2 days left to be good on his word...

You're confusing jailbreaking and unlocking. Jailbreak = hacking the OS to allow for non-signed applications to be installed. Unlocking = using the iPhone on a non-allowed network, requires jailbreaking AFAIK.

My iPod is jailbroken and because it is, I can install a Last.fm submitter (caches while offline), an IRC client, games (solitaire and blackjack are nice to play while listening to music), an actual background to my apps rather than plain black, etc.

Hell, I can even screenshot:

(I didn't pay for Mail / Maps / etc. and had them long, long before they were released officially)

And no, it doesn't act as a USB mass storage device. If you plug it in with no drivers, it'll only act like a camera.

This is probably to prevent easier hacking of the device, but a lot of good that did. Hell, they're even fucking with the root and stuff now. 1.1.3 is jailbroken via a modified OS.

Not much you can't do to the uber-hackable iPod Touch / iPhone.

some webmail providers are on the iPhone built in, gmail & yahoo. For others you have to enable pop access and get it that way.

Then get a device that acts that way, enjoy it, and forget about the options that others like but that don't meet your needs?

My Sony takes literally 10 seconds to build the database and it only needs to do it once when you have changed what's on it. Then again it has a flash drive rather than a hard drive which probably makes it quicker.

The iPhone and iPod Touch also have flash memory, i'd say.

Unfortunately, I didn't took a photo of it before putting it into it

Now I'm just waiting for my 16GB CompactFlash card to replace the 4GB Microdrive

From what I've read on the Touch/Phone is that no, they can't be used as an HDD. Regular iPods can be used as HDD's however. Before I had my external HDD, I had all my Top Gear et al on my iPod.

It doesn't have coverflow, though.

BTW: I tried that on a nano and it lagged a lot. The touch I tried didn't, AT ALL. I suppose the iPhone is the same way?

You should be able to put any file on the iPhone via AFP (and even ftp??), if music or movies are then recognised and played is another question. The good thing about this is that you can do it without plugging the iPhone into your computer over wifi.

Oh really? What happened to all your other qualms with the iPhone? Such as lack of 3G and HSDPA and general Apple sucky-ness? Suddenly the only problem you have with the iPhone is the MSC issue?
