Lilleput you are being an absolute cock.

What's your problem?

Anyway, about the RAM tests, Lilleput is most certainly mistaken.

Many ram sticks are faulty and having a faulty ram stick in your computer can casue many problems such as: data loss, spontaneous reboots, blue screens, program failures and wrong data will end up being written to the hard disk. Also, a RAM malfunction can cause correct data to be written to an incorrect location on the disk, thus overwriting some other piece of data. In the end your HDD will be completely screwed up and you won't even notice all this happening. All the other annoying things I mentioned, will probably not be taken seriously and you will think it's just some random error. I doubt you will even consider the faulty RAM the cause of all this.

Anyway, why take a chance?

I urge you to just download the free software - memtest and burn it to a CD.

Then boot from the CD run the test overnight and you will be sure of your RAM condition. Why take unnecessary risks?

You may think 'It won't happen to me', but It can, I encountered over 6 faulty RAM sticks in various computers over the last few months.

You're kind of right, but also quite wrong. Go read some good sources on how RAM + computer systems work before spewing some sudo facts. It's stuff like this where other people form incorrect opinions from.

Most of it.

If the ram is faulty, it just usually BSOD, NOT corrupt your hard drive.

Faulty ram does corrupt data, but not the physical drive.

I agree with Solberg on this matter. I always memtest my ram, it takes less than 5min and can save you so much hassle in the future.

The OCZ ram I bought from newegg was faulty, it booted without any problem, but couldn't install Vista properly and gave me lots of weird random error messages. Ran memtest and it picked up the problem within 20seconds.

I had some new ram off newegg as well. All worked fine for about 2 weeks, then things started randomly popping off errors and bluescreening which finished in corrupting nearly all my data on my stupid raid 0 setup (ever try to rebuild one of those after it corrupts?). Of course as soon as we try a ram test, the source of the problem is quite obvious.

If ram is going to fail, it will fail early on. You should always run tests on new ram to see if they pick up anything rather than just popping it in and risk losing years of data. If it passes the tests then good, you know you have good ram, if it fails, you've just saved a huge headache and possibly prevented loss of lots of things you haven't got backed up. I think to not test it just because it's new is quite the wrong idea, I wouldn't be trusting my computer to people who thought like that.

Meh he was all over the place with his post. It's clear he has no idea how those parts work. I'm not going into detail because that is way too much work. But basic knowledge of how recent computer architecture works would be nice.

Being right isn't as usefull as knowing why you're right, and how would you know if you're right anyway (which he didn't)

One thing I learned with tech is don't bother too much with price drops or latest stuff. There are price drops all the time and stuff is obsolete 5 minutes after after it comes out. Besides it's a birthday present so I'm on a time frame Maybe I'll get me one after the drop
