| Hedgehog Sandwich | I'm not 100% sure why I chose RAID0, I'll never use the speed because I'm throttled by a 100Mbps router. I don't want RAID1 though, because I paid for 1TB of space so I want to use it, and the chance of one of the drives failing is very slim because I don't work them too hard. Maybe spanning would be better, I think that was one of the options. edit: According to some info, I'll actually gain by using spanned drives, because the read/write speed stays higher for longer and is more consistent than RAID0, while not being any slower. ![]()

To me, it's worth it to wait. Just those two times irritated me enough. Also, RAID0 is not RAID. ![]()

RAID 0 = interleaves stripes between both disks. Improves speed as while computer is waiting for 1 drive to finish you can do something with the 2nd drive, but does not back up data. RAID 1 = mirrors content on both disks. Degrades performance but has 100% backup. RAID 4 = parity stripe alternated between disks allows one disk to fail and be replaced RAID 5 = like raid 4 but a dedicated parity disk If you are expecting some disk recovery safety, RAID 0 doesn't buy you anything. If either disk fails you are screwed. There is also JBOD, "just a bunch of disks". It's like raid 1, but raid 1 spreads writes across both disks, while JBOD fills up one disk at a time and then spills over to the next. Neither one is failsafe.

| Hedgehog Sandwich | Thanks, but I know about RAID. Just finished resetting this and setting it us as a spanned drive. ![]() |

Google also released a huge article on HD reliability and found that it doesn't matter how much or how little you use it, if it's going to die, it's going to die, though temperature has an effect on it. Obviously with any data, it's always a good idea to back it up.

| The best is I had a customer yesterday with a R5 and they had a failed drive so they just plopped anther one in there without calling me. Same interface, different size, different speed. First the drive failed because it was too small and then it killed the entire array. He had no backup and I had a very hard time feeling sorry for him.

My Poppa got it with his Sony Bravia TV a few months ago. Well, he bought it a few months ago and Sony sent the PS3 about 3 weeks ago. In a show of phenomenal self restraint, I'm not even opening to postal box until I've finished all my assignments in 2 weeks time. It's gonna kill me!! |

| Lexus? Oh shi- | How long has this promotion been going on? You Aussies always bitch about higher prices, but nobody gave me a PS3 when I bought a TV, even though it wasn't a Sony TV... |

Yes we do complain a lot, but I'm guessing you have cheaper fuel, better public transport, cheaper stuff in general.

That's why I was complaining... I'd much rather have US prices than a free PS3, trust me. Sadly we don't get either... but at least gas has come back down to $1.25/litre.
