So how many ghz thingys has it got?
That's the thing, you can't compare it directly to a pentium (that's why I didn't like them) or atleast I don't know the proper way af doing so images/smilies/mellow.gif
Ahhh I see...oh well
IIRC the AMD CPU's run at slower clock speeds (the ghz rating), but are more efficient so can do the equivalent amount of work as pentium running at a higher clock speed. This is why AMD would call a chip say a 3800 to say it's roughly the equivalent of a 3.8ghz pentium, even though it's running at a slower speed.

(Anybody feel free to correct me - I'm a couple of years out of the loop on this sort of thing)

Yup, this is correct. However, the numbers don't actually match up too well anymore. For example, which Pentium are those numbers referring too?

It was more true a couple of years ago. For example, I'm running an AMD Athlon XP 2400+ which at the time was equivalent to a 2.4GHz P4, but actually runs at 2GHz itself...

Unfortunately, these days the comparison numbering is a bit more arbitrary, increasing in steps, even though it is difficult to compare. There are now so many CPU models as well, it's difficult to know all the (subtle) differences between them - let alone how they compare in terms of speed.
In fact, it's gotten so bad apparently the rating of CPUs now confuses the whole industry, which is frankly a little stupid. If anything they need to make life easier for the consumer who wants to pick out their CPU...

Anyway, for more info, THG did an article about this last October... Read it here.

So, yeah, comparing AMDs with Intels is getting harder and harder without looking at benchmarks...

(Just a quick disclaimer: I'm out of the loop on this a bit as well. Last time I really looked at this subject was a while ago so I may need some correcting somewhere...)

I think now AMD use the PR number (eg: AMD 3200) to compare it to their own older CPU's?

Yeah, I'm confused as to the whole CPU market right now as well. With the Intel re-branding and the move to dualcore chips, it's just confusing.

I personally have an Athlon 64 3500+ which runs at 2.2 gigs but I believe compares with a 3.4 P4...?

AMD 3700+, 1 gig ram, 300GB harddisk, dual layer dvd, 512 mb graphics, xp home (no I didn't buy that monitor but that was the only one I had, getting a new one next week as well as new keyboard and mouse)
So where did you order it or did you buy all the parts and put it together?

That's not bad at all... a system like that would've cost you even more to build I think, so not a bad deal considering you didn't have to patch it together.

What mouse/keyboard are you getting? I've got two brand-new Logitech MX1000 warranty replacements. Wanna buy one? images/smilies/biggrin.gif

^ I'm just gonna keep the keyboard, it's not that bad, but the mouse is a ball mouse images/smilies/rolleyes.gif so I just ordered a Logitech G5, don't like cordless.

Well remember that Logitech pretty much has the most lenient warranty policy... call them, tell them there's a problem and you'll get a new one in the mail.

I'm not promoting scamming a friendly company like this, but keep in mind that they're helpful if you ever have problems. images/smilies/tongue.gif

Beats the stock deck hands down. It sounds like a have a subwoofer in the car but I don't images/smilies/smile.gif. The stock 6x9s are pounding really hard so yeah I'll blow them soon as well. And probably the stock amp will be done too.

yes, generally the names that AMD use for their chips relate to what a pentium would be pulling off in gigahertz - so a 3400 @ 2.2GHz is pretty much the equvalent of a Pentium 4 running @ 3.4GHz images/smilies/smile.gif
