Default The unspeakable red ring of death thread - Register here

As you probably guessed if you have seen my new avatar, my 360 is dead. I got the ring of death this morning while playing Forza. Strange that it happened while I was in a very popular car auction though... images/smilies/sad.gif

This has happened to my friends and pretty much anyone I know who has a 360, so I want to see how many people here have experienced the RROD.

So now my 360 has to go back to M$ courtesy of UPS. Apparently this is caused by Call Of Duty 4 and will happen to anyone who plays the game, at some point. A new motherboard is needed, and is much quieter too. So it's not all bad. images/smilies/smile.gif

I became so frustrated with this issue that I trashed the Xbox, cancelled Xbox Live, and will take some serious convincing to ever use a Microsoft game console ever again.

I know of 5 of my friends having their 360s give up with the RRoD. They aren't too good on the reliability side of things the 360s are they?

Took them a fortnight to fix - OK since then (Jan 2008) - but a right pain in the arse I can tell you. Looks to be mandatory.

Unfortunately, the only console I own is a PSP. Seems to me that the people from where I live usually either goes for the Wii or the PS3. I'd rather take the PS3 as well, considering it's only $50 more and it is more powerful.

The PSP is indestructible, I have had mine since they came out 3 years ago, and i've dropped it down the stairs enough times.

But my 360 seems to fix itself, I've just turned it on, and it's fine. Reminds me of a TG quote:

'One minute it's saying there's something wrong, the next minute it's saying everything's fine, I don't know what I'm talking about.'

So now I'll go back up and fins it's dead again.

I personally haven't, but my brother had it happen not too long ago and he simply opened it up and fixed it himself (it isn't that hard).

Sure, opening up your 360 voids your warranty, but instead of shipping it back to MS and waiting a few weeks, may as well do it yourself since that's probably the only thing you will ever use your warranty for any way.

Can someone explain this RRoD? Do the four quarters of the ring light up separately or the whole thing at once? What can cause this? And it looks like only 3/4 of the ring is lit up in your avatar.

It looks exactly like his avatar, and it's usually caused by overheating, but it could also just be general hardware failure. If it is overheating, then it's pretty easy to fix, according to my brother at least.

I've had an X360 for about two months now, no problems so far. The main thing is, making sure it stays cool enough. Keep the vents free of dust and leave it in an open space, instead of in a cabinet.

The 360 is so terribly designed it was bound to happen. I am kind of jealous of you US folks, you guys get new motherboards and repairs...we get new system...that were made in 2006 so they are pretty well the oldest versions possible.

The red ring has been around for a while now, but also has had a fix for while, I think all 360s from about mid to late last year are all fine and any reconditioned 360s were fixed with an improved cooling solution.
