Default to someone with hardware knowledge

i bought a videocard of a friends friend, and it turns out it works with an AGP pro port, which i don't have on my mainboard

since it's quite old, and my cpu only is a 1.4ghz, it might be time to upgrade
but to what?

i don't know anything about mainboards, and my only requirement, is that the cpu is faster, and that the videocard fits

doesn't have to be anything special, don't play games or stuff like that

Okidokie - first off lets be clear.

The Motherboard and the CPU are completely separate entities. The CPU has nothing to do with AGP. If you want to update you're CPU, you can, gerenally quite easily but obviously what you need if you really want this videocard is a new motherboard.

Question time: Why do you want the videocard (and what is it; brand etc) Cause if you were doing fine without until now, maybe you don't even need it. What are you looking to spend, and seeing as your current PC is quite dated and you don't need anything too advanced, it might be best to just go pick up a clone box or a new cheap PC from Dell or somewhere which will gladly meet your needs whatever they may be.

If you don't play games, then why do you need a new video card?

euhm...i'm a programmer, i know my hardware-theory images/smilies/wink.gif

i need a new one caus i had a ati radeon 8500 DV, which is almost 10 years old i think, and recentlty made my pc freeze

now i bought an ati radeon 1900 XTX (or is that just the name of the cooling?)...for 50€ images/smilies/blink.gif

my psu, ram, hd, soundcard, DVD-rom/writer are still up to date, why change them? just want to be able to use the videocard, and while we're at it, 1.4 ghz becomes a bit on the slow side, so i'd change the cpu as well

problem is that i'm totaly unaware of what's available/what the possibilities are and am looking at this list like bush is looking at international politics

What sort of RAM do you have now? I'm guessing it's far from up to date, seeing as it's paired with a 1.4 GHz CPU. Your best option might be to get a motherboard with integrated graphics, since you don't play games.

1.5 gig DDR...

and i already bought the graphics card images/smilies/wink.gif

basically, the only thing i wanne know is what's a good (price/performance) mainboard that has a AGP pro slot?
and then secondly, what speed of CPU is best to get these days, not the fastest/newest, caus they're way to expensive, but one of the previous releases that recently dropped in price...

The thing is, you're going to have a hard time finding a motherboard with an AGP Pro slot. AGP Pro was never very popular to begin with, and AGP as a whole was replaced by PCI-Express years ago. If you absolutely have to use that graphics card, you're going to have to check ebay or some other place for used motherboards, and you might end up paying more than for a brand new one with integrated graphics.

Also, with DDR3 already having been out for a while now and poised to replace DDR2, your DDR is pretty old and probably won't be reusable. If I were you, I'd buy an E2xxx Intel CPU, a cheap LGA 775 motherboard with integrated graphics (GMA X3000 or higher, or something from Nvidia), and 2 GB of DDR2. I'm not sure what prices are like in Belgium, but you should be able to get that for around 200€ or less.

Built both of these machines for my sister and my aunt, they don't do any gaming so it really does fits the bill.

AGP Pro was a bit oddball, I had it on my last mobo so I could use my Wildcat III. Tough to find these days.
