Default Top Gear Presenters Car-to-Car Communication?

Alright, so we all watch Top Gear. In the races episodes, the boys use mobile phones in order to stay in touch with each other. In the cheap car challenges and other events like that, they seem to be using 2-way radios or CB style radios.

However, in the "Greatest Driving Road" episode 10x01, throughout the journey the guys seem to be talking to each other, and they are in constant communication. I don't see any noticeable radio equipment, and they don't seem to be pushing a button to talk.

Anyone know of what kind of equipment they are using? I'm looking to organize a bit of a motoring holiday (preliminary stages) and I would like to have a way for people to communicate with each other, without having to use mobile phones. Handsfree will be a requirement.

Thanks for the help.

Im not sure about the brands, but I've read somewhere that they use some sort of radio connection, and the mics/speakers are in a single unit that is attached to the headliner, in front of the rear-view mirror.

I read somewhere that due to people complaining about the 2 way radios (they have to use one hand to push the talk button so they're not 100% concentrated on driving) they now have a new, totally handsfree system where they dont have to push any button or take their hands off the wheel.

I dunno where the mic is, but I imagine they hid it away from the camera

Do any of you ever remember a show called Tomorrow's World? The presenters were a mixed bunch and I wondered if ever it ever came back into being that one of the new presenters would be James, he's talented enough to front a show like this, comedic enough to have a fun element in the show and has enough enthusiasm to keep an audiance entertained.

I remember! I actually used to enjoy that show quite a bit too although I'm not sure James May would be the perfect candidate for such a thing (doesn't seem like much of a technology nut).

That's easy stuff.. we used it for our Lemons racer.

Just get some Midland radios (have voice activation), and a earbud/headset.

^ That would be a good setup for the Land Rover club I'm in since it's a bit hard to use push to talk radios when navigating rough terrain. It's even harder for the guys with manual transmissions. What's the range on those things?

Only 30 miles. images/smilies/tongue.gif

I have the slightly older waterproof model with 26 mile range-- Serj and I tested them out at Flat Rock. He was at subway waaaaaaay out in detroit, about 20 miles away and we could still talk with each other. I HIGHLY recommend Midland radios.

I'll have to try these. Pretty expensive or are they good for the hobbiest?

Wow nice range! Even with lots of trees and stuff around it seems like they would still work brilliantly.

Pah, Us Jeep drivers with manual gearboxes manage just fine with PTT radios even on extremely rough terrain images/smilies/tongue.gif
