Default Torrent Uploading Speeds help.

Ok, when downloading the latest Top Gear my max download speed was 220kb/s and average was 110kb/s. Yet people on IRC were saying they were getting 400-600kb/s and some 3-4 Mb/s. How is this possible, I am using uTorrent and have the best internet my service can provide. Any tips?

They'll likely have faster connections?
My provider gives me maximum 6.5Mbps

Some others in the country offer upto 24Mbps, though it's not available here images/smilies/sad.gif

I have a campus connection, so I can get as high as 1.5 MB down and 5 MB up. I think one problem could be that people aren't seeding after they've finished. That can slow things down a bit.

I'm having some trouble myself.
I'll upload quicker then I'll download atm...
Down speed : 9.5 kb/s
Up speed : 26 kb/s

I think it has something to do with my settings because this just ain't right. I should get up to 200 kb/s download images/smilies/sad.gif

It depends on who you connect to.

If the seeder you are connected to is on dialup, it wont be fast. but if you are connected to a high-speed server(like me images/smilies/wink.gif), then you will be able to max out your connection..

Well alright, kinda related... My average download speed is around 250-300kbs but upload is only 5-20kbs?? (and my upload connection should be capable of the same speed as download)

Can anyone tell me how to fix the upload speed?? (its REALLY annoying on private trackers, where you have ratios...)

oh that's going to be a long conversation.
actually, for a kick off:
1) have you tested your actual uploading speed with any other software (just to be sure it can physically show that figures, not only on paper) ?
2) are you using uTorrent ?

anyway, you better join irc, you'll get it solved in less than a minute there.

Your bandwidth rates depend entirely on your ISP. A typical consumer internet connection has piddly upload rates. I can't really get anything higher than 50 kB/s upload rates, but that's just because of of the connection from my ISP.

If you're behind a router, you need to have certain ports forwarded.

My down speeds have significantly increased after port forwarding. Up speeds are still 50 kB/s though. images/smilies/sad.gif

But generally speaking, Internet connection speeds in Europe are a lot faster than Canada, since their technology is years ahead of us. So if you get around 100kb/s, that's about right, even if you have a 5Mb connection.

Keep in mind that your torrent speeds aren't necessarily related to your maximum up/down speeds from your ISP.

I have a max download speed of 7.5 Mbit (which is about 1 MB/sec, I think) from my ISP, but I rarely get more than 300 kb/sec when downloading a Top Gear. That's way, way less than the maximum throughput for my connection.

The speed with which a torrent downloads/uploads is totally dependent on how many clients are in your swarm, the ratio of seeders to leechers in the swarm, and the connection speeds of those clients. Most of it's out of your control.

That said, there are things to do to maximize it. Port forwarding is necessary for some clients. Also, most clients have a setting for limiting the upload speed. Check your torrent client's settings for this.
