Hmm, surprising that Sony won out on this one. I guess I can go ahead and invest in a Blu-ray player now that the war is over.

So, any poor saps here actually spent money on HD-DVD equipment?

My laptop came with a HDDVD drive but I didn't spend any extra on it, in fact I didn't realise it had it till I took delivery.

To me it looks like BluRay won because sony had the money to throw at it. Sony couldn't affod to lose.

I think that if Microsoft had thrown in a HD-DVD player with the Xbox, this would have gone on for much longer. The whole reason I got a PS3 was because it came with a Blu-Ray player and was roughly the same price as the Xbox without HD-DVD.

In Dec. '06 I got the HD-DVD add-on for my Xbox 360 (free after gift cards) then a year later I bought my parents the Toshiba HD-A3 ($200) for Christmas since it came with 10 free movies (mine only came with King Kong). Amazon had a B1G1 free HD-DVD deal so I got two more movies and paid only $20. So basically we have 13 movies and 11 of them were free.

I bought an HDDVD player for my 360, but it was on clearance.

I guess I have to buy a damn PS3 now. As soon as I heard NetFlix decided to go BluRay exclusive I knew it was over.

Doesn't mean I have to like it.

Yep, Time Warner was the breaking point for HD-DVD.

So I guess now buying a PS3 would now be a pretty good investment (well maybe not, but it's cheaper than the other Blue-Ray players nonetheless)

The thing I really hate about Blu-ray is the name. It would be all right if it had a e in it, but as it is it sounds incredibly stupid.

I wonder if Microsoft's now going to release a Blu-ray player for the 360.

The past several weeks, there haven't really been any price drops or sales anywhere...I've got $450 in gift cards to burn on a blue-ray player, and I want the following:
1) I have a Samsung TV I LOVE, and would love a new generation Samsung player that doesn't have such mixed reviews
2) I don't want to buy a Sony player...sort of a protest...but it's the best value player out there...but I'd prefer a newer generation player than that same one with the dark blue strip across the front...

Hasn't come up yet...I'm probably end up with the panasonic that's been around $400-$450...

It's better than HD-DVD IMO.

I'm glad Blu-Ray won, it is the better standard technology wise. It holds much more data in the same amount of space as a HD disc.

Well, "better" is subjective.

There were some things that HD-DVD did that was better.

I thought it was just me, I hate the name too. For one, HD-DVD also uses a blue laser diode, so they could've been Blu-ray. I'm much happier with Bluray, so I think I'm gonna type it that way. But I think a few years down the line when everyone forgets about HD-DVD, we'll just be calling Bluray hi-def DVDs.

What I don't get is why would you need as much space as a Bluray disc provides? A one hour 720p rip is about 1 gig, and HD-DVDs hold 15 or 30 gigs, right? That should be more than enough for a few hours of 1080 footage and various bonus features and languages.

With more space you can have a higher bit-rate. This is good for movies with lots of busy scenes. But the main reason I like having more space is for storage, bluray isn't just for movies.

^ Yeah, it's gonna be sweet when recordable Bluray discs and recorders become affordable. Imagine putting all of Stargate SG-1 on a single disc. images/smilies/biggrin.gif

yeah that region locking is great technology, I especially love it when they don't release dvd's in region 4 for several years or not at all and then make us pay a premium on disks.

I have both and there is 0 difference in picture quality or sound quality

Well I can say I predicted this one correctly I knew that the companies would go for technology with more space, to make it harder to burn and with more technology on it to (try to) stop pirating. I am happy its over, sad to see whats going to happen to the companies that supported it, they are going to lose a lot of money.
