Keeping receipts is one thing (I do it all the time), but boxes? You really gotta be a pack rat to do something like that. I guess the point I was trying to make is that most people will not qualify for the hd-dvd --> blu ray exchange (cause' most folks just throw the boxes away soon after opening). But I guess that was CC's original plan though.

Oops, but doesn't normal return policy require the box too?

I keep boxes for quite a while, partially due to laziness. I still have all the boxes for my PC parts that I built at the end of December.

^ So do I, but not out of laziness. It's mostly being anal. I keep all boxes and I keep the receipts in said boxes. Makes it all easy to find if I ever need the receipt or the box, but on the other hand I have so many useless boxes.

Same here, but it's all worth it when I want to sell later on.

I still have the original box for my Dreamcast, and I bought that over eight years ago (OK, that might be me being a little bit of a pack rat...). Requiring the original box for a return is a reasonable requirement, especially as most boxes come with special molded packing material on the inside. I mean, if you don't have the original box, what do you plan to return things in? A big plastic bag? An empty cardboard box that's too big for whatever you're returning? Neither one is easy for a retailer to store or transport.

Where I live I have very little room, so I have to be anal and throw away anything unnecessary. I can't afford to keep boxes for a decade or so just so I can ship them off somewhere. It's all good though, I can't even remember the last time I've had to return something anyway.

Mum still has the box for her Dick Smith VZ200 (circa 1982) lying around, including the box for some of the addon modules like the cassette player and 16kb ram module (that's as big as an external hdd)
