its true, take those specs and change it to dual dual-core 2.0 ghz chips, and with student discount its only $1962 here. for under $3000 you can get the dual dual-core 3.0 ghz parts....

able to load on windows, and the beast is quick.

apple's price for performance just started looking really nice.

true. i guess the OP's point was probably that, regardless of what you think of Macintosh as an OS, Apple is selling the fastest hardware available in consumer-land for cheaper than the competition (apple's prices for a 4 processor Xeon machine is only a smidge higher than dell's for a 2 processor machine) so whether you run 64 bit os x or 64 bit XP, the hardware is still hot.

EDIT

and it looks like dual dual-core 2.66's will run you about $4000 at HP, vs $2500 at apple... images/smilies/wacko.gif i smell price drops soon.

Isnt Woodcrest a server class chip, a Xeon? Wouldnt a Core 2 Duo be a better comparison?

You can't run Core 2 Duo chips in SMP, which is why the Mac Pro uses Xeons. images/smilies/wink.gif

EDIT: I just did a price check at Newegg, and here's what I found:

2 x 2.66GHz Woodcrest Xeons $1,521.98
2 x 512MiB 667MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM $209.98
Intel dual-CPU LGA771 server board with 16GiB RAM capacity $519.99

Total: $2,251.95

And that's just for the CPU, RAM and motherboard! images/smilies/eek.gif

FYI, the newest Xeons (Woodcrest) have the same architecture as the Core2Duo (Conroe). In other words, their performance is the same, but the Xeon is shipping with higher processor speeds than the Core2Duo.

The main difference is that the Woodcrest is 64 bit, and Conroe is 32 and Woodcrest can be used in multiple dual-core processor configurations (Conroe is limited to only one dual-core)
