Default Web hosting

O hai guyz.

So I'm getting knee deep in updating the website for the place I work at. It was outdated, it was yucky, and it's got code used by moses to make his 10 commandments website from back in the day (aka hamsterdance.com). My goal originally was just to update the material for the site that my dad gave me but after seeing it in its state, I thought it best to give it a makeover (code and aesthetics).

Now I can't stop fiddling around with css, divs and photoshop and want to put some working versions of web layouts up online for demo purposes and learning purposes. I want to get a space where I can make stuff, take it down, etc etc. and then slowly build it into a site of my own with my resume, bio and other stuff to show off to places and future jobs.

Problem is: I have no such webspace, and of course the one given by our ISP at home is PATHETIC. It has like 10 MB of space, and no support for php, asp, or L.S.D. So I was thinking of something like angelfire or devilwater but I don't think they have many (if any) features. I even tried my local walmart, and they were fresh out images/smilies/sad.gif. Ok seriously though, I was thinking of either godaddy or 1&1. But I wasn't sure which was more trusted, and a better overall service, and I was wondering if anyone here has tried or knows about them or even another service.

1&1 seems to be the cheaper of the 2. Godaddy is the more renowned site.

Any thoughts?

1&1 here. They're good.

Godaddy blows for hosting. They are good for buying domains, but do yourself a favor and host it elsewhere. 1&1 is a step up. I guess if you're just going for a low traffic website anything will work.

As far as cheap companies go, I personally like bluehost.com

I build websites for a living, so I've tried quite a few different hosts (I often have to update sites for clients who already have hosting plans, so I get exposed to a lot of different hosting companies). I used to send all my clients to Lunarpages, but I find Blue Host's servers to be much more stable. Lunarpages tech support is good, but thankfully I've never had to contact Blue Host's tech support, so that's a great indication of their quality of service.

If you want more feedback on specific companies, search google for independent web hosting reviews.

I, along with a few other people I know, have nothing but good experiences with www.crystaltech.com

Thanks guys for getting me away from godaddy. I'll search google for reviews for 1&1 (more reviews), bluehost, lunarhost, and crystaltech.

You've all been +repped! images/smilies/smile.gif

I was with HostRocket.com for many years and they were alright.

Whatever host you go with though, make sure they have PHP5 and MySQL5 support. Both have been out for 1-2 years and it's rediculous if they haven't upgraded yet. Many scripts no longer support PHP4 and since you're picking a new host, it makes no sense to go with a PHP4 only one.

PHP 5.2.x is preferred (rather than like 5.0.x).

Also, I recommend getting a host that offers Cpanel, as it gives you a ton of control over your site(s) (built in phpMyAdmin, simple to setup addon domains, etc). Some of the other control panels are weak in comparison. Blue Host uses Cpanel, and they do a good job of keeping their php/MySQL up to date.

Would it be bad form for me to suggest hosting it with the company I work for? images/smilies/wink.gif

I think the php requirement sort of narrows it down as some of these either don't list it or list it but require a much higher price per month for it. Bluehost seems to be giving great deals and the latest php support. It's very tempting.

I would also recommend Lunarpages. When I had a silly site with a phpbb2 forum it worked great and was easy to use. Cpanel was great.

Lunarpages is good, but Blue Host is a few notches better from my experience.

I've hosted my site www.hellbilly.net for about 6 years on www.imhosted.com and been very happy. It has all the latest cpanel and those one click installs of popular things like forums and such through Fantastico or whatever it's called. I'm getting more then enough for my money and i never seem to run out of space and bandwidth no matter what i put up there.

In those 6 years i think my site has gone down twice and their respond time in customer support via ticket or email is fast and was resolved in a matter of minutes.

There might be cheaper hosts with more gigahurtz and wazoozle but stability and customer service has made me stick with them.

Thanks everyone for your recommendations. I looked through all the sites and I think I'll stick with bluehost. I'll probably go for the 12 month package, as I don't think paying 250 clams up front might be a good idea right now with tuition and other pending payments.

Hope to show off Lurkerpatrol.com or .net sometime soon images/smilies/wink.gif. +rep to all.
