I would have to say that ATi cards are fine. I had an X800XL for years, and it only started to artifact after four years and when I OC'd it. Otherwise, it ran smooth and stable.

Just bought the Sapphire. Figured it was worth the extra $10 for knowing she'd get decent support if she ever had any trouble.

Yeah, should be a pretty substantial improvement. Sapphire is a good company too.

My only worry at this point is she won't be able to get the full power outta the video card due to her CPU and that the 2600 XT may have been a better choice.

I think it will be fine. A few years ago, my brother built a PC with a 9800pro and a 1Ghz Duron. We all thought the CPU would be a serious bottleneck since the 9800pro was a hot card back then. Turns out, the PC actually rocked hard and we were amazed out how well the latest games (back then, such as BF2) could be played with a hot video card and a not so great CPU.

A P4 is old, but it's not a complete dinosaur yet, so I think it'll be ok.

Um.. expect a bit of problems with these AGP cards driver wise. It seems that with every new catalyst version a AGP fix comes out a week later.

Also that drivers that support for these cards could stop coming out a bit sooner than you expect.

But then again, you should be happy they're still making AGP cards images/smilies/smile.gif

What driver version should I use then? I was planning on just using the latest version.

Would a beta be better? Or should I use an older version?

I think 8.5 HotFix is the newest non beta one, i'd try that one first.

Start of with the driver disk you get though, for all the extra features (hdmi etc..)

Really, why? By the time they get the disc to press, it's already old. Better to download the latest IMO.

Plus, she has no use for HDMI or anything like that. She's strictly using it to game and for Maya work.

The software for all those extra features aren't always in the driver downloads, thats why.
But I imagine you're smart enough to get there one way or another, there isn't anything you could mess up..

We'll see though...

At the very least, she'll be able to set the AA/AF levels super high without much of a performance penalty.
