Default Windows Vista (Farewell Windows XP my trusty old friend)

Well, after a full 5 years using Windows XP, today was the day I put my old friend out to pasture. It's the longest I've ever committed to an Operating System, and it never let me down once. I know most of you will find this hard to believe, but the only BSODs I ever got were ones that I caused intentionally (ah the joys of stuffing around with drivers that you aren't supposed to) and I never once got a virus. I used it in all of its various guises, of course the latest, Media Center Edition 2005 was the best, but now, it's time for it to retire.

So here I am, not an hour into my life with Vista and I have everything set up pretty much how I like it. Which is impressive because I'm picky. I guess the first thing you notice about Vista is the interface. God its beautiful. The screenshots do make it look nice, but you won't fully understand where I'm coming from until you use it. The animation and effects are gorgeous. And they don't make you any less productive by taking up time either, they're just nicely integrated into the Windows experience that we are all very familiar with.

My advice: If you're a bit tech savvy get Windows Vista Beta 2. Even if you don't want to run it natively, at least get it and set up a dual boot set up so you can at least see what all the fuss is about. It really is very good. Not as good as Microsoft initially promised, but that doesn't stop it from being a huge leap forward. Anyway, it's free to download to anyone, and you have free use of Beta 2 and Release Candidate 1 when it's released until July 1 2007. Vista Website Here

My Advice 2: The first thing you want to do when you install it is to remove UAC (User Account Protection) It's a true pain in the arse. You'll find the disabler in your user account settings.

I'm wanting to do a dual boot, but I'm clueless. So I'll just try and clear up some space on another hard drive soon.

And I don't wanna leave XP until I can confirm there's no incompatibility issues, not to mention I don't want the demo version to expire before I can pick up a legit copy. images/smilies/wink.gif

It's meant for IT guys to use to test and stuff. I highly doubt it'll last forever.

Demo version runs until July 1 2007.

It's surprisingly stable so far, it isn't as fast as it should be, it's a little bit behind Win XP, but obviously that'll be fixed before final release. I'm happy that I migrated so far...

If you want to dual boot, just install it as normal on a different partition. The Windows Setup will take care of the rest.

But still, it takes too long for me to change OS so I'll wait a few years as I'm happy with XP currently.

lol win2k is bad on my syste. bsod often. Xp though has never blue screened unless i was doing something outrageous like not cleaning the dust bunnies out of my heatsink on my cpu hsf for 3 years. Yea that was my fault.

I've tried the earlier beta release of vista and it was laggy as hell. and who knows if it's compatable with games yet.

Run "Recovery system mode" under Win XP (press F8 at the start of booting) and then try to fix it with "fixmbr" command. It should help but I can't guarantee.

Nah, that wouldn't do it, tried it already. What actually fixed it was making a dos boot disk and running fdisk to delete non-dos partitions. images/smilies/wacko.gif

Well it's installing now so we'll see what 64-bit computing is like. images/smilies/tongue.gif

Downloading Vista now. images/smilies/smile.gif

I'm gonna format in a couple days, so before I do, I'll just install Vista over XP.

Windows Vista Day 2: Impressions on living with Vista for a day. So far it's going pretty well. It's slow in 1 or 2 spots but overall better than I expected. The vista version of IE7 is a shitload better than the XP version and I reckon it's probably better than firefox too, which is a surprise. iTunes clashes with the Aero interface so i cant use it if i want the snazzy glass effect and windows media player 11 wont add any files to the library at all. There's also a region glitch with the xbox 360 media extender, but i believe microsoft have noted that to be a bug and are going to fix it. American 360 consoles won't have such troubles. other than that, it's going very excellent

Slow in a couple spots? Is this something that should be worked out before it officially launches? One thing about XP is that it's not boggy, so I don't want to switch to something that is.

don't get me wrong, it's not boggy. it's just a little laggy when you do one or two things. really, so far it's very stable. especially for a beta. I have daemon tools 3.33 running now too

Just out of curiousity, when does it get laggy?
