I have a file that has a cover, a table of contents and some other things. All these add up to 34 pages. Now, I want to number the document but I want page 34 to be the first page to have the number. So page 34 will have the number 1 on it, page 35 will have the number 2 etc.
I have been trying to do this of over an hour but just can't ![]() I looked on Google, and it seems other people have this trouble too. However, I couldn't find a solution that works Any ideas?

Do you want it to start numbering the pages from page 34? Try doing this. Go to the Insert menu, click Page Number, then choose Format Page Number, select Start at, then enter 34 there ( or whatever the page number you want it to start over). Hope this helps.

If 2007 is anything like the previous versions there is a way to do it:
Word has a feature called "Sections". Basically, you can specify parts of a document you want formatted in different ways. This includes the page numbering and other stuff like that. If I remember correctly. The way to start a new section is: Insert-> Break -> Section Break. Or something similar. I'm not too sure about 2007, but that's how it works in 2003. You do it at the end of page 31 (select "Next Page", as the section break type) and page 32 will be treated (as far as formatting goes) as a new document. You can then number page 32 on independently from everything else. I just stumbled across this feature recently when doing a huge term paper. It may take a little while to get everything sorted out, but it's probably the only real way to get it done. EDIT: Just checked, it's in the Insert -> Break dialogue box (in 2003). Yep my WORD 2003 I'd use sections and customize (US English) para then start number from setting - but that does not look like its how 2007 - so a pointless post all around.
/EDIT the last refuge of the 'rascal' - try the help? Last edited by Cobol74; May 25th, 2008 at 08:32 PM. |

Well, you don't have to defend your reasoning behind getting '07.
![]() I agree that nothing in the layout of the menus is totally illogical, but I would wish that someone had put in a "classic view" option. I like having all the toolbars at my fingertips without having to go into different tabs for different categories of functions. I wish they did it like the Windows control panel, where the user can just switch to classic view or navigate with the new menus depending on which is fastest/better for them. Personally, I don't like the categorization of commands, but I like being given the choice. |

Lol, I had this exact same problem, I eventually had to add "Insert Section Break" to the quick access bar to use it.

Are you doing it right? The section break is on that picture I posted earlier, that yellow button. Press that, right selection is 4th from up. Now it should act as two separate documents.
The cursor must be on that spot, where you want the break. And then you must format the page number, select on between "continue from last section" (or something) and "starting number", select starting number. Hope you can understand what I'm saying, english isn't exactly my first language. ![]() Last edited by h-p; May 27th, 2008 at 05:51 PM. |

One more issue, I got the paper numbered, and now I want to number the table of contents with Roman numbers. I know about page breaks and everything, but it seems that when I click on insert page numbers, there is no option for Roman numbers. I am using word 2007. How can I get roman numbers?
