| I'm having a problem with file sharing in XP. Ok, I have three PCs on my network, all running XP. I'm using a Linksys router. Two of the PCs are wired, and one is a laptop connecting with wireless. The two wired PCs can share files just fine. The laptop cannot for some reason. However, the laptop can connect to the internet just fine. I just started having this problem after bringing my laptop to another location and using a wired ethernet connection. Now that I'm back on my home network, I now have this problem. All of the PCs are in the same Workgroup, and I can see the laptop from the other PCs when I go to "view workgroup computers", but when I try to access the laptop from there, it says it's not available. I don't use any firewalls and the XP firewall is off on all the PCs. I tried running the network setup wizard again and it doesn't work. Please help It's got to be something simple, but I don't know what it is.

Rep Power: 16 ![]() ![]() ![]() | On your latop, have a look at the properties of the Wireless network connection (Control Panel -> Network connections). Ensure the "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" client is listed and enabled (ticked). |

| Yes it is. Any other suggestions? EDIT: The weird thing is: On my laptop, I can access the files from the other computers if I add the shared folders manually in My Network places by using the IP of the other computers.

| Turn everything off, including the router. Then turn everything on, one by one. Worth a shot. | |

| Tried that already too. It seems like it has to be a setting somewhere. So are there any other settings I need to check?

| Can you try mapping a network drive to your laptop and see if it actually goes through? Right click on My Computer and select Map Network Drive. Then put in the computer name\share name that you have shared on your laptop.

Rep Power: 0 ![]() | Run ipconfig/all from the command prompt and check what the ethernet settings are and release the IP lease on the wired connection. You may have to plug the wired port into the switch to get the connection information and also to release the settings on the wired connection. Make sure the workgroup name hasn't changed and that you have not joined a domain. |

| Thanks, I'll try that ![]()

| Ok, I plugged it into a wired port on the router, released the IP and renewed it.....and still can't see the other PCs in My Network places, nor can I see the laptop from the other PCs....yet I can surf the internet just fine on the laptop, both with the wired and wireless connections. I don't know what else to try ![]()

| Have you tried mapping a network drive? What OS? If XP, double check that the firewall is off.

Rep Power: 18 ![]() | it happens all the time with wireless file sharing. You can only input hte ip address into the folder path bar.... so like.. \192.168.1.101\ I had this problem and couldn't figure out after a LONG ASS TIME. Also, mapping drives isn't so fun =)

![]() I'm not ready to take the plunge yet....until I have to. Other than this network problem, XP does everything I need it to do.

| So by NETBIOS name it doesn't work but if you use the IP it does work. Interesting. I have never seen this. My mom's computer is wireless and I can access her system without a problem by using a mapped drive from my system. I'm not using IP either, I'm using the NETBIOS name.

Some setting changed when I plugged into the campus network, and I have no idea what it was. Maybe I should just re-install windows...

| This is going to the extreme now. Remove the network card from Device Manager, reboot Windows, let it detect the card, try again. If Windows previously detected it just fine, you shouldn't need a driver's disk.

| Should I do this for just the wireless card, or both?

| I'd do it for both since you seem to have the same problem with the wired connection as well.
