I got it working after quitting IRC, giving it ~30 seconds for timeout and good measure. Restartet client - everything OK.

Make sure to connect to the irc.finalgear.com roundabout and give it a few retries. One of the two servers may go down from time to time.

That's because you don't have an IRC client installed... (mIRC, Chatzilla, etc.)

stig.irc.finalgear.com works

irc.finalgear.com = a DNS pool, i.e. multiple servers (2 at the moment). It should connect after 2-5 tries though as it's likely to get stig instead of vtec. Odd that it's not for you.
