Devouring your soul.. after belly rubs.
|
Will go into bigger detail here..
We co-locate our servers at 365Main in San Francisco. We purchase space through another company. Said company was fine for 18 months. We got a notice several days ago saying "We are moving to Seattle. We are taking all your servers from San Francisco, and putting them in our new datacenter." Then everything went down.. power issues at 365Main(but their site remained online.. silly, eh?). The main reason we co-located in San Francisco, is because we had three people living in the city that could get to the servers in case something broke. Now the hosting company wants to move us further away.. and those three people are relocating as well due to personal issues(But I will remain here in Maryland). So we are hunting down a new datacenter, and will move the servers ASAP.. it is likely that the forums will go down for a day or two while we overnight ship the servers to the new location, but we can probably avoid that by staggering the server moves. Anyway, thats what is going on right now.. we will keep you informed when we receive new information. |

Local to Maryland would be lovely.. another choice is to get a few T1 lines.

There are a couple of other providers at 365 Main as well -- my machine is there via bitpusher.com -- although I'm not entirely sure I'd recommend them at this point.

Not that it's the most location-centric co-lo. But the place I use in Columbus, Ohio has been great for me, and they are really cheap and have a couple great pipes back to the Ohio Third Frontier network.

use telstra's colo, I guarantee you that the cost of the site for a year won't be enough for one month.

Server Admin
|
Hi, I'm PC, one of the other server admins. Bitpusher decided it would be loads of fun to continue to cycle the power on our servers tonight. If we're lucky, there won't be any more of this idiocy, but I'm not holding my breath.
Anyway, I fixed the corruption that is almost always associated with a database server being power-cycled while under a heavy load, so everything should work now. Sorry for having more downtime. We're looking at all of our options for co-lo, and hope to move to someone who can actually keep our boxes up as soon as possible. |

We have a bunch of servers at Voxel (www.voxel.net) and we also use Softlayer (www.softlayer.com). Softlayer in particular had great setups, including backend private LAN VPNs to your server. We've been using Voxel for 7+ years and have never had a problem with them.
I don't know what you are paying per month, but you might consider just moving the software and chucking the servers. Both Voxel and Softlayer have sub-$200/month dedicated packages, sub-$400 for 10mbs bandwidth. Alternatively, there's also Hurricane Electric in the SF Bay Area (www.he.net). I would stay away from the whole T1 thing. I did that for years and it's no fun. Even my personal stuff is now on a dedicated box in some random datacenter. Also, if you can get space at 200 Paul in San Francisco, that's probably one of the best datacenters in SF, along with Saavis and Layer3. HTH, Chris. Why would we chuck like $5000 worth of servers to pay more per month (I assume) for a lesser powered (I assume), hosted server?

We just need a more powerful front end server (funny thing is it's only a few months old), or we need to run dual front end servers with a single database server (the DB server's load is usually just fine and nice and low).
