I'm surprised they even bothered to do the board--they stopped taking the points seriously years ago. Remember how excited James was when he won in his V12 jag in series 6? You can tell they don't really care now.

If James' excitement is a measurement for the seriousness of the points board, then this was the most serious points board ever.

THIS. *points to the GIF of the victory dance posted several pages earlier*

You must spread more victory dances before giving any to narf again.

The absurd point system only exists to make fun of car magazines. It's completely irrelevant as far as informational or entertainment value is concerned about who "won" a cheap car challenge, because the winner doesn't actually get anything.

I'm not trying to refute this, but surely there comes a point where the parody isn't worth it anymore? If them trying to make some sort of redundant statement is actively hampering some peoples' enjoyment of the program maybe it should be scrapped? If an artist tries to shoehorn too much symbolism into a painting he WILL end up with a message-filled piece of work, but it'll make little visual sense and look rubbish.

I didn't really mind the scoring segment anyway. It's fairly enjoyable watching them sabotage each other, and May's dance more than made up for any qualms. =]

Are you kidding? Compare that lame victory dance to James furiously jumping up and down and yelling in genuine jubilation in 2005. "I WON SOMETHING ON TOP GEAR!!!" Or, for that matter, Jeremy climbing on top of the Volvo he bought while the other two look on in disgust.

I'm going to keep saying this until people get their heads wrapped around it:

You can say it as often as you like, it won't make it any more true.

The magazines you claim TopGear is making fun of, don't do cheap car challenges. The only time magazines use a point system is when they do new car comparisons. Which TopGear also does, but strangely enough TopGear never pulls out the scoreboard for those, do they?

If the last 3 or 4 times we've seen the scoreboard were the only times we've seen it, then I would be more inclined to agree with you, but it's not. Go back and watch the early cheap car challenges. They use to take them seriously, which was great, because if the boys don't care about winning, then what's the point? Friendly (or not so friendly) competition between James, Jeremy, and Hammond is great. Remember the "epic races"? If none of them gave a crap about winning, the show would suck. I'm sure the producers might get creative and adjust the point scales in favor of one presenter winning, for comedic reasons, but it was never as painfully obvious as it is now.

The scoreboards sometimes are funny, like when they were trying to sell Porsche calendars and Jeremy goes "nought, nought.... nought..." or "I lose 35 point from my wet crotch!"

Itd be nice indeed to see a true competition between the 3. Where they take out the cheap cars they found, did a number of challenges, got points but werent told really until the day of filming the episodes.

'Lame' victory dance? Good sir, I challenge you to fisticuffs at dawn!

In all seriousness though, both those examples you've given are their first victories. Of course they were more energetic and enthusiastic. Considering they don't actually win any sort of prize, are you really expecting them to do some sort of Roger Federer fall-to-the-knees celebration every time they win something?

The economy challenge was good, too bad they left it out. I understand the decision as such, but I wonder why they didn't give the whole challenge a dedicated episode. The material was shot and post-produced either way, and it would have done the challenge good and free up space in 15x02 for other things.

That said, it seems to be a trend for this season that they have too much material (which surely is better than having not enough) and thus cut it, which is unfortunate. This happened to James' volcano piece in 15x01 and now to the challenge in 15x02. I wonder what else we're going to be offered this season which could have been improved by not cutting away as much.

EDIT: ... and I forgot to say that the "escape" from Colditz castle made more sense with the economy challenge as the following piece as in trying to cross the closest border without attracting too much attention.

Think of it as "point of pride." Recall May's delight upon winning the "Rear-Wheel-Drive Ice Race Challenge" with a Morris Marina, his slapping the dash certainly feels more genuine there than the victory dance he did in Ep 2 here. That's the difference between "genuine" victory and "staged" victory.

I agree with the fact it looks staged - and of course it was - but this was the third or fourth take and they were all getting a tad bored with it. The first time he did it, it ran much more naturally from Jeremy and Richard arguing, and James looking genuinely happy to have won. Why they did so many takes I don't know - the first one looked fine to me, but hey, it was James and Andy that asked for more and they're meant to know what they're doing...

THEY BROUGHT ON AN ISETTA!

I don't care if it was only for a couple minutes in the studio. Isetta = instant cocolove.

That and the Porsche porn = one of the best TG episodes in a while.

Just saw the episode, and i know it's not their best but it was a good one. Loved hammond's face when he heard about his m3 (the accident part). James segment was great, he really enjoyed that car!

9/10

Was it just me or could you see (well, as much as is physically possible) Sabine as German Stig?

No, not just him.

No, not just him.

Have to say, I agree. I detect slight bosom-age...

I am maybe a bit smaller than Sabine, and that's about the tittage I have in a sports bra-like contraption. </tmi>
