Red Wings sign goalie Ty Conklin to one-year deal

Detroit? Ty Conklin has been around long enough, and with enough teams, that he knows the down sides of coming to a new city.

Returning to the Red Wings for the second time eliminates one of the larger problems.

"Just finding the rink, you worry about that coming to a new city," said Conklin, who agreed to a one-year contract worth $750,000 Wednesday to back up Jimmy Howard. "I won't have that problem here. A lot of familiar faces, great team, it's exciting to be back."

Conklin, 35, enjoyed his best pro season when he backed up Chris Osgood during the 2008-09 season. Conklin won a career-best 25 games with a 2.51 goals-against average and .909 save percentage.

But with Jimmy Howard ready for the NHL, the Wings didn't aggressively look to re-sign Conklin, then an unrestricted free agent.

Conklin signed with St. Louis, where he had a good first season but struggled last season (8-8-4, 3.22 GAA, .881 save).

"It wasn't my best year," Conklin said. "I didn't play a ton, but in all honesty, when you're out there, you're still playing hockey."

Conklin is confident he'll rebound with the Wings.

"Being comfortable in the surroundings, so many familiar faces on the team, just being part of this team, I'm excited," Conklin said.

Conklin will back up Howard, with Joey MacDonald and Thomas McCollum splitting the goaltending in Grand Rapids.

They seem very "Olympic" and they remind me of the Toronto allstar game logo...Not sure if i like them yet, ill have to see the sweaters first.

On another note, back in 2008 before the draft the (stupid-ass) owners thought it would be cool to tell the world who we were going to pick first so all over town were stickers and billboards and even shit on tv called "see stamkos?" Well, in a funny turn, the new owners have used the exact same models and now there are "signed stamkos". pretty damn funny. the top one is from 2008 and they reused it during the negotiations period, lol. Here have a look:

Predators' ownership could take some cues from the Lightning's ownership. As fans you want to see that sort of thing around town, and you can't draw in new fans if you're not putting yourself out there. Yeah, a winning program is great and will bring in some people, but they've been a winning program for quite a few years now. There's always that "they just need to take the next step" argument, but there's not many more steps to take.

It's a ton better than in years past, but it could get better.

This stuff happens because our owner and Staff actually listen to the fans. Start something there in N-ville and the NHL will take notice of they dont respond. (just ask our old owners)

I can't complain too much, the new owners have upped exposure quite a bit in just the year and a half they've been here. It was just as recently as a couple years ago you couldn't find a print ad or hear one on the radio, now there's radio ads on all the time on the sports stations, billboards around town, and ads constantly in something called a "newspaper". I just wish they'd hurry up and get ads on non-sports radio and on all the local TV stations, instead of just when there's a hockey game on NBC.
 
Derek Boogaard's brother charged

MINNEAPOLIS -- NHL enforcer Derek Boogaard had been out of drug rehab for just one day before his younger brother gave him an unprescribed narcotic pain pill at the start of an evening of night-clubbing, drug-taking and heavy drinking that resulted in his death, prosecutors alleged Friday.

A complaint filed in Hennepin County District Court said Aaron Boogaard, 24, told police he gave his brother a single oxycodone the night before he found Derek Boogaard dead in their Minneapolis apartment May 13. Derek Boogaard, 28, died of what authorities ruled was a toxic mix of alcohol and drugs.

The younger Boogaard was charged Friday with unlawful distribution of a controlled substance, a felony that also applies when narcotics are given away for free. He was also charged with interfering with the scene of a death for allegedly flushing the rest of his brother's drug stash -- a mix of oxycodone and related drugs -- down the toilet before police arrived, the complaint alleged.

"This is a very tragic situation," Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman told reporters. "Most of us know someone who's had problems, troubles with alcohol or drugs. And most of us know that a person, the day they get out of treatment, shouldn't receive for any reason the drugs that put him in treatment in the first place."

An attorney for Aaron Boogaard said the entire family had suffered a tremendous loss.

"We will address the allegations in court rather than in the media, but note that Aaron was and remains devastated by his brother's death," attorney John W. Lundquist said in a statement Friday.

Assuming Boogaard has no criminal record, the state's sentencing guidelines would call for 21 months of probation and no prison time, said Chuck Laszewski, a spokesman for the county attorney's office.

Freeman said Derek Boogaard got out of a New York rehab center just a day before he started using drugs again. He said Aaron Boogaard's statements to police made it clear his brother did not take the pill to relieve pain "but to prepare for a big night out" and that Derek Boogaard had the narcotics shipped home illegally from New York, without a prescription.

Derek Boogaard, who was one of hockey's most feared enforcers and a fan favorite for the Minnesota Wild before joining the New York Rangers last summer, struggled with pain and addiction, his family acknowledged after his death.

"It's our understanding that Aaron kept his brother's non-prescribed illegal drugs and attempted to parcel them on some kind of limited basis," Freeman said. "... This was not the first time he had been in treatment. He had been in treatment before. And everyone around him should have known that you just simply can't give this kind of drugs to a person who's badly addicted."

Freeman said Aaron Boogaard will not face a more serious manslaughter or homicide charge because authorities can't prove the single pill he told police he gave his brother directly caused his death.

The prosecutor said Derek Boogaard had "a lot" of Percocet, OxyContin and oxycodone in his system when he died, and consumed "a lot" of alcohol that night -- too much to fairly charge Aaron Boogaard with more serious offenses given that Derek Boogaard may have taken the additional drugs on his own, Freeman said.

The brothers shared an apartment in the Warehouse District of Minneapolis, not far from downtown. Aaron Boogaard found his brother's body when he returned home after picking up another brother at the airport. Their parents, Len and Joanne Boogaard of Regina, Saskatchewan, did not respond to messages from The Associated Press on Thursday or Friday seeking comment. On Thursday, the family issued a statement calling Aaron Boogaard's arrest unfortunate and painful.

Bail for Aaron Boogaard was set at $10,000 and jail records show he was released from the county jail Friday afternoon into the custody of another unspecified authority. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Minnesota had placed a detainer on Boogaard after his arrest.

Shawn Neudauer, a spokesman with the federal agency, issued a statement Friday saying Boogaard was transferred to ICE custody and granted release under bond, with a notice to appear before a federal immigration judge at a later date.

Aaron Boogaard was drafted by the Wild in 2004 but never played with them. He has bounced around various lower-level teams and has not appeared in the NHL.

Derek Boogaard, known as "The Boogeyman," was one of the most popular players on the Wild for his rough-and-tumble approach to the game. What the 6-foot-7-inch, 265-pound forward lacked in skill and goal-scoring ability, he more than made up for with his fists. He was one of the most feared fighters during his six-year NHL career, racking up 589 penalty minutes in 277 career games. He left the Wild for a four-year deal with the Rangers last July and scored one goal in 22 games before his season was ended by a concussion five months before his death.

Boogaard's family donated his brain to the Boston University School of Medicine, which planned to examine it as part of a broader study of head trauma in athletes for signs of a degenerative disease often found in athletes who sustain repeated hits to the head.

Wings' Kris Draper expected to announce retirement Tuesday

One week after Chris Osgood retired, it appears another long-time Red Wings player will hang up his skates, as well. The Wings have scheduled a press conference for Tuesday at 11 a.m., at which time center Kris Draper is expected to announce his retirement.

General Manager Ken Holland and Draper will attend the press conference, which will take place at Joe Louis Arena.

Draper, 40, has been considering retirement this offseason. If he were to return, Draper likely would have to battle rookie Cory Emmerton for a spot on the team.

Draper said recently he would not be willing to come to training camp without a contract.

Draper has played 1,157 NHL games, all but 20 with the Red Wings. He has 161 goals and 203 assists in his NHL career.

Draper also played 220 playoff games with the Wings and had 24 goals and 22 assists.

Kris Draper will be missed. He was a team leader that lead by example.

Whats funny is i live in the worst town on earth at the moment, Orlando. its only 70 miles from the Tampa Bay area and between here and there is just small towns. What kills me is that if you sat the name Tampa Bay Lightning here nobody knows what your talking about most of the time. I have always wondered why that was the case. How much would exposure in this shit town help? well, we will finally know as they have just announced that my Bolts will play a preseason game here. This is a good start considering that the brand new basketball arena has no tennant now, lol. Im curious to see the turnout, shit, ill be there for sure along with atleast 5 more people!

Advertises the NHL during NHL games, moves the North Stars to Dallas, moves the Jets to Phoenix, makes another team in Minnesota, moves the Thrashers to Winnepeg, presided over two lockouts, instituted a salary cap to limit the amount the players were being paid then accepts a salary well within the top 10 players' salaries...
 
He has alienated fans, ruined the TV coverage by limiting games available to fans.
 
and raised the NHL to a new level. I hate the guy with all my hate that i can...hate but other than some shitty idea's he has done alot for the NHL. what needs to happen now though is he needs to step aside because it will take someone else to get it to the next level. Besides, the salary cap is a good thing.
