911 porn

Maybe some of you have already seen this on Fat Marrah's show, but here it is again.
This video is on the current topic of the 996 as a bargain car, a small trend that's going on for some months now. Had the chance to ride in a 996 again after a long time some weeks ago and BOY is it a car for the money. Go out there and buy 996's while they are cheap if you can.

Not to be a party pooper, but aren't those considered a low point in the 911 lineage? Also, IMS bearing?

Mostly just overblown on the internet, official Porsche figures are much lower than what people will tell you - ask Porsche people, they'll tell you that a hard driven 996.1, 996.2, 997.1 (fixed for 997.2) won't have this issue but babied ones will have... at least that's what I know from when I personally asked around. I wouldn't really bother. And if so, fix it for two grand and you're done for the life of the car. But with them being so old, I'd even go further and say most false bearings have exploded by now and those who don't have, won't ...

Also, why low point? Never really understood why. People just jump on this bandwagon. Maybe because it's the first watercooled and the first 21st century Porsche and not based on a car from the 60s anymore. People wanted the 911 to be different once - Porsche does it differently on the interior and exterior and suddenly people say it's not as it used to be. Can't have it all I guess? I like them because they're different. I think they're really good looking and the only reason they could be considered a low point I think is because of the interior with its build quality nothing short of a VW Golf mk3.

I think the "low point" thing is definitely due to it being the first water cooled 911 and its styling choices, while bold, were not loved by many. The Boxter came out around the same time, and the similar styling cues with the weird shaped headlights was not well loved by Porsche purists. IMHO, other then the controversial headlights, its actually one of the more boring 911's ever made too. Sleek and utilitarian, but almost to a fault. It is still fairly popular to do a front end swap to make them look like the newer 911's. You'll notice that Porsche went back to the round headlights during the next major restyling.

I haven't looked too much into the IMS thing, but my understanding is that it was primarily the base model that had the problem, and by the time the 4S and Turbo came out that they had it figured out. Its also been so well hashed out among enthusiasts that most Porsche mechanics have gotten very good at doing the swap to the upgraded IMS bearing that its no biggy to have it swapped. I agree with the sentiment that its probably no longer a worry too, since they either had it done or it won't be problem.

The 996 series is still one of the cheapest 911's you can buy. Still has the legendary engineering and longevity of that they are known for, but due to questionable styling and the bad reputation plus having more desirable models that came before and after, its still kind of a niche car.

My dad has the Turbo model and bought it new and he is basically the only person who has driven it (much to my brother and I's disappointment). They were going for super (relatively) cheap a few years ago and I wish I had the funds to get one. Still the cheapest Turbo model out there, but they have creeped up from what was the high $20k and Low $30k to more like $40-50k range. That is for this area (Colorado), but I think that is a general trend too. Porsche is definitely the official sports car of Colorado, especially the Carrera 4, 4S and Turbo for obvious reasons, so we see a lot of them around and Craigslist has a fair few for sale at any given time. Still smile every time I see one with Ski's or a Bike on top cruising up to the mountains.

Definitely worthy cars and lots of aftermarket stuff to make them even more awesome too.

A couple of things:

1) Yes, the IMS bearing issue does not actually turn up in that many 996 era 911s, but I wouldn't tout Porsche's official stats on the matter: look to an independent source like rennlist. Porsche were known for denying the issue ever existed for nearly 20 years and refused to replace the blown motors under warranty, charging their customers for full rebuilds.

2) You can't fix it for a couple of grand. You preemptively replace it for a few grand in the hopes you never get the problem. If your car develops the IMS issue, then it's already too late- time for 15-20 thou for a new engine.

With this I just wanted to say my sources aren't some forum threads but talking to people who actually who own such cars. :)

About the second thing you?re probably right. Though I guess really after 15 cars the affected ones have been mostly washed from the market.

I admittedly don't know much about Porsches, so I am just echoing what I read on the internet and hear on podcasts. :p
Also, I've seen people claim the upgraded bearing is a temporary fix, that you have to re-replaced it, so :dunno: and you know what's the permanent fix: LS SWAP.
To be honest, I just find it to be a bit boring-looking compared to the 993 and 997, but they're all too expensive anyway. I just giggle when I see people mentioning Porsche prices in the USA.

To keep the 996 hype train alive, some nice action of someone actually driving his sports car like it should be done starts at 1:30.

EDIT: The cheapest 996 in Brazil is 42k Euros.
Which is also the cheapest 911.
The cheapest Porsche in Brazil is a 2005 V6 3.2 Cayenne for 43k Euros. Yeah. Nope.
