America and big engines

But you wouldn't have that nice v8 burble (unless you rig up an external sound system with a cd to 'emulate' the noise of a v8 on your Geo Metro).

I like my daily driver to be quiet when cruising. A friend of mine had open headers on a fox body, it got quite irritating listening to the motor. Even when it didn't have open headers, after a while I just wanted quiet.

Didn't you promise us some dyno sheets of your Porsche vs the Trans am? I'm still waiting!!!!! *crosses arms, taps feet* :p

Take a look at the torque curves, folks. That is what's great about "big" engines. I put "big" in quotes because the LS1 is just a notch heavier than the 2.5L 4 cylinder that lives in the 944, making it a popular swap; it's also lighter than BMW's inline 6 used in the last M3.

disclaimers
Original dyno sheets appear below. My translation may be off because HP and Torque are supposed to intersect at 5250 rpm and they don't for the 944. I traced the TA results over in red because they didn't appear to show up well on my scanner.

The TA was bone stock (perhas a CAI & catback) when it was dyno'ed; the 944 has a top-end rebuild, b&b triflo headers, fabspeed 3" turbo-back with no cat (shhhh!), custom programmed chips, and boost at 1.1 bar (16 psi). They both get roughly the same gas mileage (24-26 mpg).

The spikes on the 944 dyno were some weird harmonic imbalance between the car and dyno; car is fine on the road.

Both figures are measured at the wheels.

All of our Camaro's and Buick's, be it v6 or v8 were a bit noiser on the highways at speed.

Have you ridden in a G-body Park Avenue at highway speeds? Even with the supercharger in mine there really isn't much noise going 55+ at 1,200rpm except for the wind. But if you stomp on the gas it will roar to life and throw you back into the seat.

I neglected to mention this was 6 years ago when we even had the Honda, and the Camaro's were 82 and 88's, the buick a '77 regal v8. I didn't intentionally leave that out, more of just to point out that not all "big engined" cars are nice and quiet, and that newer 4 cylinders are not what they used to be.

And yes I have been in a G-body PA. My grandfather (surprise surprise) owned a 01 or 02 model, and before that an early 90's Le Sabre. Both were rather quiet to ride in at any speed.

I find that hard to believe. Buicks don't have rev counters.

While PB already proved it once... Buck Grand National, and Buick T-type.

Also this tread is bring out people smashing on 4 Bangers, saying they can be for the long haul and etc. In truth my GTI is my first 4 banger so i was also a V6+ man, but, the amount of tq some of these new 4 Bangers with turbo (ie the GTI) they make for great high way cars. Doing 80mph @ 3000rpms is not bad, my old B5 V6 Passat would that (tho it was a 5 Speed vs the 6 speed in the GTI) I have more power then needed to over take. Yeah when I take the merc out, there is something about getting up to highway speeds and over them without having to pass 3000rpm's, but, i dont cry now when i go to the fuel pump.

Have to agree with you there. My Chrysler has extremely good power on the highway. My old Grand Prix V6 would have a hard time hanging with my PT accelerating from 80mph on.

I remember you mentioning this before, but you didn't say if it was just around town or at highway speeds. That is why I asked.

I'm bringing this back to the top because I was reading some stuff about engines and came across some interesting info.

The LS7 (7 liters/427ci) weighs in at 458lbs and makes 505hp, 470lbs-ft.*
LS2 (6 liters/ 368ci) weighs in at 448lbs and makes 400hp/lbs-ft.*
LS3 (6.2 liters/ 376ci) weighs in at 430lbs and makes 430hp/424lbs-ft.*
The BMW M5 V10 (S85) weighs in at 528lbsand 507hp/383lbs-ft.
BMW S62 v8 (old M5) weighs in at 526lbs. 400/369lbs-ft.
BMW s65 V8, derived from M5 v10, for the new M3 is 445lbs420hp/295lbs-ft.
BMW S54 I6 (E46 M3/Euro E36 M3) 3.2L weighs 478 338hp/269lbs-ft
Mercedes 6.3 Liter AMG V8 weighs in at438lbs 510hp/464lbs-ft.
Audi A6 4.2 V8 weighs 422lbs 350hp/324lbs-ft. (apparently this also works for the RS4 4.2, but this is unconfirmed)
Audi 5.2L V10 weighs 484lbs 429hp/400lbs-ft
Bugatti Veyron W16 8.0liter TT 880lbs 1001hp/921lbs-ft.

VW 3.2L V6 FSI 372lbs 260hp
Jaguar AJ-v8 4.0L weighs 441lbs 294hp/280lbs-ft. This is the non supercharged engine.
Toyota 1zz-fe /2zz-ge 1.8L (celica/ Lotus Elise) 225lbs (1zz)140hp/125lb-ft, and (for 2zz) 180-190hp /133lb-ft

Italicized are quoted from Wikipedia, I was to lazy to dig through the sources.

I had a shit load of trouble finding accurate info on Japanese engines weights. Everyone either wanted to include partially assembled engines or worse, entire transmissions (RB25DEt for instance is 720lbs with it's trans, the KA24 with trans is 550).
