I've seen these online, but can't find out how do install/get/do anything with them. Anyone know anything about this?

I take it your iPod isn't jailbroken yet?

To jailbreak, you first have to downgrade to 1.1.1 (the exploit used to jailbreak was patched in 1.1.2). Download this and follow the instructions: http://conceitedsoftware.com/iphone/site/112jb.html

The 1.1.1 firmware file it references can be downloaded right here.

Once you downgrade and visit the jailbreak website which exploits a TIFF image vulnerability in mobile Safari, it will install Installer.app (used to install 3rd party apps easily) and then fix the TIFF exploit.

Then you install a little patch (covered in the readme) and upgrade back to 1.1.2 and then jailbreak via the file in that ZIP. Presto.

Then once you have Installer.app, it's easy as pie to get lots of great apps.

Here's three other repositories though I suggest you install:

  1. "Community Sources" -- it can be found under "Sources" in Installer.app
  2. http://repo.us.to/ -- add the apps that come with ONLY the iPhone to your iPod! i.e. Maps, Mail (!!!), Notes, Weather, and Stocks
  3. http://modmyifone.com/installer.xml -- a website that maintains a good sized repository of apps and is widely recommended

viper, with calender can you input stuff actually on the ipod? i know the touch comes with calender but they hobbled it by only allowing you to change stuff in iCal ... ie you couldnt amend the calender on the touch.

There are both iTouch calender 'fixes' that gives you that option or you can download the iPhone calender that has it built in.

So if i were to do this, would it void the warranty?

Also, would I not be able to update to any future firmware after doing this?

Really? Pretty sure I've always been able to add stuff to the calendar and such. Just wish my contact's birthdays would show up on it automatically...

Not sure, but I wouldn't think so as...

... if things go badly, you can just go into iTunes and hit "restore" and everything will be reverted back to as you originally got it.

This is entirely a software mod, so there's very little risk involved and I haven't heard of anyone bricking their iPod. The only problems I hear about is when people unlock (i.e. different carrier) their iPhone. Jailbreaking is pretty safe.

Technically yes, as jailbreaking would constitute as modifying the software. But simply doing a restore will remove all traces of this modification, your iPod will be as "new". I wouldn't worry much about this as people have even returned unlocked iPhones in Apple stores!

Which also answers your next question. Yes, once you've jailbroken your iPod updating it to a newer firmware will remove the jailbreak and all the programs you've installed. 1.1.3 is supposedly coming out next week. I would recommend holding out on upgrading if you don't like to lose your jailbreak. Not until the hacking community has figured out how to jailbreak 1.1.3 at least.

You can always avoid updating, especially on the Touch. ;)

Thanks! I tried this on my friend's touch (since mine hasn't arrived yet... stupid post office being closed), and he says it kicks ass. Can't wait to do it to mine (or get mine, for that matter).

Actually, I have another question: SpeedFan is saying that my power supply is giving me ~3.78V on the 12V line, and -16.97 on the -12V. Any idea on why this is like this?
