Awesome Thread... [Automotive Edition]

^I got a Ferrari F40 birthday cake once.

^

And odd as it may seem, if all of those were parked there, I would get in the Ford GT. The F40 is damn tempting though.

 eh? How anyone could not instantly step in the F40 and drive it off is beyond me. I'm not saying I wouldn't try the others if I had a chance (ZOMG Porsche sound), but if I had to choose one, F40 without a doubt.

That's weird but VERY well done. I especially like the weird "kidney grille" like this

The first person to notice the unusual bit in this car gets a +rep :)

I MUST have more info on this. A Finnish mate of mine pointed these kind of diesels out to me a few years ago, IIRC they were called "superboost".
I dunno how they do it, but by boosting these diesel engines to insane amounts, and revving them VERY high (for diesels) they were able to make stupid power, while maintaining reliability.

very high WANT factor

They are most commonly called Superturbos here. The definition is a bit unclear, some say that to qualify as a superturbo, the engine has to produce over 100kw/liter, but it's not official. They start out in life as a Mercedes OM600 Series engine. They come in several different variants, the ones most commonly used for high power are the 12V (OM603) and 24V (OM606) 3.0 turbodiesels. The OM606 is considered the ultimate Mercedes diesel engine, 3.0 TD with 177hp/ 330nm stock. It has several advantages over the 603, including better oil distribution and stronger components. Due to their high compression ratio (22 stock), they can take a shit ton of boost without losing their reliability or their economy. The car I posted before can manage 7l/100km (33mpg) on the highway, and puts out nearly 1000NM of torque (at 2000rpm).

The most common turbos used in these cars are Holsets (HX40<) sourced from old trucks. They are designed to take a lot of miles and a lot of hard use. Apart from the turbo the most improtant things to upgrade are the injectors & the oil pump. Injectors can also be sourced from trucks, and there are several companies who can modify the stock oil pump to produce more oil pressure (which is not cheap btw). With stock OM606 pistons, rods & block, you can go well over 400hp (and around 700NM :D) without much worries. Ofcourse with that sort of power you need either a strengthened gearbox or one from an E500. Same thing goes for the differential, an SL500 rear axle is not an uncommon swap. 90% of all Superturbo mercs are automatics.

Unfortunately it's quite hard to find videos of these mercs online, and most of the build threads are in Finnish (obviously), but here are a couple of videos:

One of my friends (he has a ~200hp W124, but he's planning to buy a W126 SEC and diesel it :)) has 2 brothers who own a 360hp W124 CE and a 390hp 190E, they are mad cars :)

^yes those are the ones I meant.
I particularly love the huge black smoke from the back of the car when on boost...

the amount of want for a 190D with 400ish HP is very great

That's it, the human race can go and pack it in now; after the Mona Lisa, Theory of Relativity, and the Apollo missions, nothing achieved by mankind can ever hope to match this.

I'm waiting for him to come back out to the local meets, the one time I couldn't make he showed up before with his previous setup.

This is bound to be a repost but just in case it's not...

You, sir, have the incorrect opinions. That Aston is straight up carbage.
