I have been reading EVO magazine (2013 May issue) article "Icon BMW M5 (E28)" Will scan and put the page links up if anyone wants me to? Anyway, I think the M5 gets all the attention, and the 2 valve e12 & e28 M535i deserve more than they get. I think many don't realize that the 2 valve cars aren't much slower.

Autocar got 7.1 seconds for 0-60 mph out of the e12, and Autoweek got 6.3 seconds from the M5 5 years later. BMW's own top speed figures for the 3 cars are 140 mph, 143 mph and 148 mph.

At 2/3s the price when new, I just reckon the M535i needs talking up a little. And with the e12 version it has a dogleg box and the car was Garching built of course. People in the press say the e28 M535i bodykit looks tacky these days, but I still like it. It's like '80s power dressing!

I'd like to see that, yeah!

Objectively M535i is not much worse, and I think EVO even liked it more in some test I've read a while ago. Not sure if it's the same as what you're referring to? But M5 is M88/3, with its history, ITBs, sound... it's really hard to argue against M88 :)

Will do, it's a 6 page color article. Of course with all the above I was talking about Euro cars, but in US testing the 182 hp e28 535i did 7.4 seconds, and the S38 e28 M5 (256 hp) was 6.7 seconds 0-60 mph. So, as ever, you payed a lot to get that extra performance. Of course in America it was a 1 year only model (e28 M5), and very limited numbers. Black exterior only if I recall rightly?

Well the E12 version with a dogleg box :LOVE

Well, if you're bringing "tuning" versions in this, then Alpina B7 turbo and B7S turbo need to be mentioned. I'm not a turbo guy, but that's probably my favorite car Alpina ever made. 300hp from the 3.0 in 1978 and 3.5, 333hp in 1981. :D

I am, and I am glad you mentioned the Alpina. The uprated B7S, which had a 3.5 2 valve, was still e12 5 series based and did 0-60 mph in 5.5 seconds with a top speed of 162 mph. That's as quick as a 300 hp LT1 Vette, and you would have to go to an e39 M5 V8 for an M5 to match it. A truly great car, and it doesn't have a M badge!!

I dislike the bodykit on the M535i, clean M5 for me please. :)

That are ghastly wheels on that E28...
