The battle for the dashboard will intensify as companies fight to supply the brains and technology behind increasingly sophisticated infotainment systems. In western Europe, the market for content-rich systems using dashboard displays of 4.5 inches and more will rise to 3.0 billion euros by 2020 from 2.5 billion euros now, according to analysts IHS Automotive. The number of new cars equipped with these more expensive systems in western Europe will rise to 40 percent from 20 percent in the same time period as customers increasingly demand smartphone-like connectivity and usability, the company predicts.

Market Leaders
  1. QNX 44%
  2. Microsoft 17%
  3. Linux 4%
  4. Others 35%

SAE needs to get their asses together to make a standard connector to these infotainment systems to make them standalone and easily upgradeable.

I really don't care about the OS in the infotainment system as long as it works well with my devices.

Ford dumps Windows for QNX in new in-car entertainment unit

As foreshadowed in February, Ford has announced a new in-car entertainment and communications system that will run on BlackBerry's QNX real-time operating system, not Windows as is the case for the company's current efforts.

Intel Xen's efforts aim to ease these situations by delivering a regime in which a single system-on-a-chip could run several operating systems. Each OS would take care of a different task: an Android virtual machine could run the entertainment system while a Linux VM takes care of niceties like keepingt the car on the road.

I'm just curious how long it will be before this stuff is all banned due to the accidents it causes from distracted drivers. No one needs to know the closest Domino's and SURELY no one should be searching for apps while they're driving down the road.

I love how the EU is striving to make cars safer - but not by making them safer to drive, but safer to get hit by and to run into things. Don't make them safer to drive, that would just be asinine.

This is why all functions are not available at all when driving...

So how long do I need to wait to order a Fiesta ST to avoid [Microsoft] Sync?

The Android based Honda system, at least in the UK on the HR-V and Civic looks like some shitty 3rd party Android unit found on the back streets of Shenzhen.

A icon for "task manager".....really?
