I go to quite a few car shows and take far too many pictures. The last car show I'll attend this season was last weekend so here are a few highlights from places I've been this year:
Starting with the Buckie Summer Show which was 5 miles from my house and was the first show of the season, the weather was miserable and it was freezing cold. I spent most of my time huddled in the car but did have a good chat with the owner of the Trabant and the chap who had the yellow Dolly Sprint. There was also a Dolomite 1500SE in attendance which I never seem to get a photo of but it is in lovely condition and was spotted not so long ago bombing down the motorway with a caravan on the back.
The next "show" was a little gathering outside my local motor parts shop which I stumbled into while on my way to buy oil after work one day. I'll have to try to remember this one occurs every May day!
The next show was at the motor museum at Alford and was called "How Many Left". The general idea is that it was for cars built after 1965 which had fewer than 500 examples remaining on the road, to be honest I don't think that was really limiting enough although there were a few rarities in attendance. There was an award for the rarest car there, that being the one with the fewest survivors based on the original production run, it went to a Renault 18GTD that was roller painted in olive drab which annoyed the purists despite it being seemingly the only one left.
There were ever good spots in the car park outside!
So then was the big car show at Fraserburgh, there is usually a good turn out for this one and the weather wasn't too bad either. There was a road run which I didn't bother with because my exhaust was fucked but the owner of the Dolly Sprint auto (the red scruffy one as seen above) offered me a lift so I tagged along with him. He liked going fast and every junction was taken sideways...
The final show of the season was at Grantown-On-Spey and is a good 50 mile drive away which takes the best part of two hours, I was apprehensive because last year was a wash out and the 1850 overheated on the return trip and needed recovered by lorry but this year the weather was nice and the turn out of cars was grand!
As a final wee bonus I saw a few other bits and bobs too.
Firstly the owner of the shabby red Dolomite Sprint (and a nicer orange one) mentioned he had a spare 1850 engine that he bought for the automatic gearbox which he wanted to sell so I went around to his house and bought that as a spare. He had this festering in the back garden:
To say it was fucked would be understatement of the century, the driver's side floor was completely gone and the strut tops in the engine bay had both rusted through so the car was propped up on blocks of wood!
Not long after I was flagged down while driving on my way home from work, the guy said that he had a 1500TC in his yard if I wanted a look or needed parts. I popped over to find a overgrown yard full of old motors! The guy has had the place since the 1960s and takes in cars that are otherwise going to be scrapped and offers them up for sale, what doesn't sell or is too rotten he either strips and scraps or banger races. He had some really odd and rare stuff including a stretched BMC Landcrab, a Fiat Strada and two NSU Prinzes!
I had to resist simply buying everything but still ended up coming away with a rotten blue Dolomite 1500, it's 48,000 mile engine will be going in my 1300...
There was also this rare Triumph 1500 which is essentially a older version of the Dolomite which is front wheel drive. I've heard rumours that there was a 1500 that surfaced up here in the 1990s which had an incredibly low milleage which then vanished again. This one is a local registration and has 8,000 miles on the odometer and a MINT interior but has been crashed. Perhaps it is the low mileage car from all those years ago...
I think it's beyond saving now but I may go back for it one day as I reckon the interior would look very nice in my 1300.
Funnily enough I actually broke down (lose wire killed the lights/instrument panel) right outside a while ago but never looked behind the fence!
The rotten Hillman Minx vanished earlier this week and a shonky Morris Oxford and a Nissan Pao of all fucking things has appeared!
