EPL 2014/15 - The English Premier League Thread

Saturday 13th September 2014

Arsenal 2-2 Man City
Chelsea 4-2 Swansea
Crystal Palace 0-0 Burnley
Liverpool 0-1 Aston Villa

Southampton 4-0 Newcastle
Stoke 0-1 Leicester
Sunderland 2-2 Tottenham
West Brom 0-2 Everton

Both Arsenal and Man C could or should, each have lost or won the game at different times, so a draw was probably a fair result. Though a better one for Man C as the away team. Gunner's full backs acting like wingers, leads them to vulunerability on the counter-attack. Coach Wenger knows this but prefers his "style of play". No EPL or UCL titles achieveable playing like that, I reckon. Man City looked pretty stong.

Jose and Chelsea look like the real deal this season, with Fabregas & Costa playing excellent football. Also, debut goal for Remy, the backup guy for Costa. Swansea gave a good display too, despite the look of the scoreline.

Liverpool had a bad day and could have been beaten by anyone, it happened to be Villa who were worthy of the win and well organised.

Koeman seems to have settled in to the EPL at Saints and he has got them playing well despite all the changes. Newcastle were terrible, feel sorry for "The Toon", i.e. the fans in English.

Spurs need better results that that to make a UCL place this year. Good comeback from Sunderland, twice. Gus has got them playing well.

What more can you say.. :woot:

Your new guys were great again yesterday, good luck with Schalke next week.

Man Utd 4-0 QPR

Well, I'm happy for the Man U fans, LvG and all the new signings, to see them get the first win of the season.

And so it begins...

Early days yet, but it's a start.

Yup. First time I've seen a United team play with any sort of swagger in a while. Plus the way Blind got quietly on with the task at hand is an indication that he is going to turn out to be a very good signing.

Can't see anyone but Chelsea winning the EPL this year but at least Champions' League qualification should be comfortably within our grasp.

Blind was good, he held things together like Paul Scholes used to do.

There could be up to six teams giving the UCL places a serious go this time, but not Everton who lack the ambition and money.

Man C and Chelsea look like favourites for two, then perm the remaining two places from Arsenal, Man U, Liverpool and Spurs. Should be interesting.

Hull 2-2 West Ham

Not a great result for either two wanna-be mid-table teams. Draws could get them in the relegation zone.

Saturday 27th September 2014

Arsenal 1-1 Tottenham
Chelsea 3-0 Aston Villa
Crystal Palace 2-0 Leicester
Hull 2-4 Man City

Liverpool 1-1 Everton
Man Utd 2-1 West Ham
Southampton 2-1 QPR
Sunderland 0-0 Swansea

The win for Chelsea looked assured for almost all the game, Villa defended well enough but didn't offer much in attack. Another goal for the "not fully fit" Diego Costa, as watched by Chelsea guests David Walliams and Samuel L Jackson.

Hull came back from a two goal defict with an o.g. & a pen to equalise, against the run of play. Man C then woke up again, hit the Turbo and won the game by 4-2. Dzeko is in some good form scoring two goals.

Arsenal are missing an in form striker, they had lots of posession but struggled in the end to get a draw at home. Giroud is still injured and Welbeck has yet to settle or isn't to EPL first line standard.

Liverpool and Everton game was a fairly typical messy, fast paced local derby.
A great finish by Jagielka in the last minute, equalised for Everton, which was probably a bit harsh on Liverpool. Sturridge is still injured and they are missing his goals.

Southampton continue to do well under new Coach Ronald Koeman, with a good performance and win against QPR. Not as close as the scoreline looks, the Saints are a good team with a bit of quality, but it's a long, hard season.

All the other EPL teams know that the Man U defence is a bit flakey, which makes them all have a go, often with some sucess. Man U got the win, but it was needlessly close, as they should be winning against West Ham comfortably, with their quality players.

Sunderland drew again for the fifth time out of six games! Still, better than losing.

The defense was fine last game. In the first half, West Ham only got one chance and that was from a mistake by Blind. The goal they got was from a mistake from De Gea. Apart from that, United had full control and dominated completely until Rooney lost his head and got sent off. Then it was just basically 30 mins of defending and holding out.

I see progress in every game now. Crosses that used to find their way into Uniteds box with ease last season are now blocked. The ball is won higher up in the pitch and instead of using 4-5 touches to the ball before passing it on, they now use 1 or 2. Now I just think the players need to get a bit stronger mentally. They got periods of the game where they collapse a bit and do some strange things.

Here we agree, there has been some progress AND Man U need to get stronger mentally.

Rarely should a team like West Ham fancy their chances at Old Trafford.

Exactly. MU looked shaky as hell and should've put the game to bed after the second goal but they let WHU back in and then were only just able to hold on for the rest of the game. Nothing wrong with the offence but still a few questions to ask at the back. They're showing promise though.

Abandoning a back three and going for four a the back probably had something to do with it

Looking forward to seeing a "full fit" Costa...

Jose says Costa has a hamstring problem and can only play once a week.
Probablay partly true and maybe mind games as well, with the other EPL & UCL coaches/teams.
