now that fuel is becoming expensive perhaps the manufacturers will be concentrating more on mpg(sorry litre) than mph.I would have thought the time is right to start producing some of the fuel efficient concept cars.Maybe VW will dust off their 3 wheeler of a few years ago and I don't mean small bike engined micro cars as these are now no more economical than the new generation of small cars.

X2.

I did like that 3 wheel concept though. 0-60 in 5 and 75+mpg.
That's the sort of environmentalism I could live with.

I'll just keep saying this until someone listens.

"Show me a car that gets 150mpg, and I'll show you regular unleaded costing $36.00 per gallon."

WTF is going on in this thread?

To be honest the attitude of feeling proud of a vehicle that doesn't manage to manage to pull even 10mpg is pretty bad. I am not a pollution Nazi I don't even believe in Global warming (the planet heats up and cools every 50,000years). But the poster is right, why can't they push the fuel economy up as well as the speed? Think of it this way, more MPG on a race car = less pit stops = more time on the track and would certainly make racing more interesting. Put it even more into perspective. More cash you save the better the car you can get because of the savings you make can be invested in an even better car? Next Veyron, SLR or other dream car anybody?

I'll do this in very simple terms.

Which do you want? Safety? Comfort? Speed? Fuel economy? Affordability? You only get to pick two.

Engines get more efficient and more powerful... but the cars they have to haul around get heavier and heavier as more consumers demand more features, and as governments demand more and more safety changes.

A good example is the recent EU regs on hoodlines, which now have to be almost twice the height they used to be to "protect pedestrians". Well, guess what - now ALL cars are going to have worse aero and worse fuel economy because of that. (To say nothing of the fact that whatever idiot who thought this up never saw a cowcatcher in action - a low hoodline is actually BETTER for pedestrian safety.)

So, what would you like, of the list above? Many of them are mutually exclusive.

FYI, most race cars don't even get 10mpg.

Don't even bother, the shit has 1 post, spambot or drunk lentil eating lesbian. Who cares.
Don't answser their shit and they just might stay away!

We're starting to see more small-engined turbos now, for example the Renault 1.2TCE engine, which has performance of a 1.6 almost with the economy of a regular 1.2 and the Fiat 1.4 T-jet engines, which does much the same.

Quite how this will work in larger engines I dont know, but for cars that sell in huge volumes, this is big news as it conserves some more mpg without denting performance. Now if Ford can come up with something similar, we'll have well handling, well performing economical cars that are safe and affordable. Who says you can only pick two....

Keep in mind that being able to extract the same power with less fuel is essentially the same problem as extracting more power from the same fuel. I'm like just about everyone else on this board when I say I love power and torque, but automatically making the assumption that using less fuel has to compromise performance is just backwards. Otto-cycle engines only convert a small fraction of the potential of the fuel into kinetic energy, increasing that fraction ('efficiency') will allow for more powerful engines, as well as keeping fuel consumption down.

I support measures for encouraging manufactures to make an effort to increase efficiancy, not only because of the inherant bennifits of reducing our reliance on oil( foreign and otherwise) and cutting pollution (even if your not conviced of climate change, don't overlook pollutants besides CO2 ), the same developments will inherantly bennifit the performance oriented automotive industry.

Don't feel like you more of a man for burning a shitload of fuel, but instead because you have a shitton of power and torque.

I am not a pollution Nazi I don't even believe in Global warming (the planet heats up and cools every 50,000years).

Your use of the word Nazi trivializes the experience of millions who were used as forced labor and/or were exterminated in concentration camps during WWII.

My mother happened to have been a Catholic Holocaust survivor of Auschwitz. I'm sure there are plenty of Germans who post on this site who don't appreciate ignorant twits incorrectly using a term universally associated with mass murder and genocide.

Environmentalists may be morons, dummies, or eco-weenies but I assure you, they are not Nazis. I can tell the difference. I met several Nazis in Austria back in the late 1970s.

that's a battle you're going to lose. People say the same thing about using "rape" in the context of beating someone in a video game or something, but you're not going to accomplish anything. different contexts = different meaning.

while you're at it you could email Jerry Seinfeld:

What do you think race teams have been doing all these years? They have been improving fuel economy by leaps and bounds over the years, this whole ecocraze about fuel isn't anything new or novel. this isn't the first time people have thought about MPG/KPL, car companies have been doing this for decades.

shouldnt it be the other way around? i feel that the car companies are focusing too much on fuel consumption rather than performance.

I don't mind the Diesel race cars, they sound too good to ban! For the last 10 years or so race cars engines have all started sounding like bees, and its all getting very annoying, the Audis actually sound like a something i could savor, so I love it, even if they're a bit quiet.

America? I don't really care about MPG being regulated, its obvious people care, and thats enough for the market to sort itself out for the most part. Plus i am also worried about prices going up if milage goes up too much (what No Boss said, i believe) so personally i'd rather just buy a fuel efficient car myself, and if regular people don't mind spending 100s on gas a week what should i care? All that does is keep the demand high enough that the prices might stay down, assuming we don't get any socialists in office :D

Good stuff. I was going to rant a little, but I think I'll just say this; please don't feed the troll. Especially when it's so poorly informed. Well I guess he's not really trolling, but whatever. :|
