Hard Drives vs. DVDs

Yeah, a HDD might need some cooling too.
I wouldn't permanently store info on that HD that is valuable to you if you haul that drive with you everywhere.
I'm not sure, but I think there are some differences between regular HDDs and portable ones you find in notebooks and such (aside from power consumption) that make the desktop HDDs more fragile than portables.

Not with modern HDDs actually, as far as I know.

The pins lock the same way on desktop HDDs now as they used to on portable drives, so the odd jostle or bump won't cause any problems. I've only ever heard of HDD failure due to heat, and that is still extremely rare.

It's still best to be extremelly careful with any HDD though, no matter if it's in a desktop, laptop or portable enclosure. I don't really want to test out which is most succeptable to damage. :D

I've had a few HDD's die without them being transported, but this is probably 6, 7 years ago now.

During the school year I usually move my desktop atleast twice a week and move my portable atleast 4 or 5 times a week and have never had any drives fail.

I could be slightly off on this technically, but as far as I know, desktop hard drives from 6 or 7 years ago did not automatically lock the disc platters in place with a pin, while notebook drives always have. If you were moving a computer around a lot back then, it was best to manually lock the pins in place. Now all drives will lock themselves in place whenever you power down the drive, which makes them much better for moving around.

Wow, thats a lot of porn! :p

Yeah, you never have enough space with hard drives. I don't have quite as much space as Oli (I only have 200 GB), but until recently, I was full just like him with about 2 GB free and that was after burning a dozen DVDs and about 4 spools of CDs. :|

I had to clear up some space though for a 54 GB torrent I'm downloading.

What's the last time you heard of a DVD crash :) .
I'm all for HDs, but I sure want my precious Top Gear episodes in a place where I can't lose them :) .

I have had two disks explode in the drive and I have had two unrecoverable HD crashes so I guess it is evens.

That would have been my guess, i would download it but it would take ages

Anyways, i got 320gb of hard-drive space, a WD 120gb 8mb cache and a 200gb WD 8mb cache. I like hardrives a lot (beacause you dont have to change cd/dvd's) and dvd's are too expensive.
