Today was the launch of a new kind of diesel here from Preem which is made from pine oil.

Sweden will be the first country in the world where you can fill up your car with diesel made of pine oil. On Thursday, March 31, the Swedish ?Forestry? Minister, Eskil Erlandsson, will participate in Preem?s launching of a new renewable diesel blend, Preem Evolution Diesel. As of April 9, 2011, Preem Evolution Diesel will be available at about 300 of Preem?s filling stations.

?I look forward to fill up my car with forest! This is a good example of how our green gold can contribute to more jobs and a better climate?, says Eskil Erlandsson.

Evolution Diesel - the world?s first standard diesel fuel based on residue from the Swedish forest industry

? A world unique diesel, called Evolution Diesel, will be launched in April by Preem, the leading Swedish oil company. Preem Evolution diesel reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 16 per cent due to the fact that 15 percent of the raw material is talloil. The unique product comes from processing a residue from the Swedish forest industry (extracted from black liquor in pulp mills) and is the result of six years of research and more than EUR 30m invested in R&D by Preem.

? New thinking on green solutions lies behind the development of the Evolution diesel. The tall oil has been regarded as waste by the forest industry. Through innovative thinking and co-operation it has been developed into a renewable resource. A creative entrepreneur, co-operative companies in the forest industry, and Preem?s collective knowhow and engagement, (and investments of 65 000 man hours) resulted in this green diesel. As opposed to other renewable raw materials used for fuel purposes talloil does not have an alternative use in food production or mean that land use needs to be shifted from agriculture.

? Evolution diesel is identical with fossil diesel down to molecule level, but consists of 20 per cent renewable material. Previously when making a green diesel, blending a bio diesel with petro diesel was the only solution. The unique solution invented by Preem?s engineers is to co-process tall oil with fossil oil in a GHT, Green Hydro Treater to create the final Evolution Diesel. The result is a regular diesel with a greener content. It represents a larger reduction in CO2 from vehicles and transports than biogas and ethanol together. During 2011 Preem will introduce 100 000 tons of Evoultion diesel on the Swedish market, leading to a total annual reduction of 250 000 tons CO2, equivalent to the emission from 120 000 cars.

? The Evolution Diesel is an option for anyone with a diesel car or truck. Driving with the new diesel will contribute in reducing the green house effect. And thanks to tall oil being 2nd generation bio fuel and as such tax exempt, it will be sold at the same price as traditional fossil diesel. The name of the product implies that the base will change over the years. The Green Hydro Treater makes it possible for Preem to include other raw materials in the process.

This is brilliant. It's not FAME. It's regular diesel partly made from forest.
I have yet to discovery any sticks or foilage in my exhaust so no complaints from me. :D

When I saw the title of this thread, I thought for a second you crashed your car into a bunch of trees.

I too was a bit surprised when they went "it's forest!". They do the 1960's kind of promotion this weekend, balloons and tatoos for the children, coffee and reduced price to the adults.

I thought you switched to a steam engine :) This is quite brilliant, use waste to make something useful!

I like this. pine trees grow by collecting CO2 from the air, converting it to carbon, which is then turned into oil and added to diesel, which in an ICE is turned again into CO2.

That's the basic concept of most biofuels :tease:

Corn grows, collects CO2, ... juicy petrol.
Wheat grows, collects CO2, ... juicy petrol.
Potatoe grows, collects CO2, ... juicy petrol.
Rape grows, collects CO2, ... juicy diesel.
Algae grows, collects CO2, ... juicy diesel.
etc etc... :tease:

Yes, but growing specialised crop for biofuel is even more destructive to the environment than using crude oil, because it uses vast surface areas and the only useful product is the fuel grown, instead of the food for the hungry which would be much more useful. Using the current woodland areas, which are a replenishable resource is better.

That works as long as they restrict themselves to waste products from other industries. However, once you start growing forests just for fuel production - which you inevitably would have to do for any meaningful scale - you're also using up space that could have gone into food production.

IMO, go algae. Much more oil resulting from less plant, and it grows in the water.

does it smell like pinesol when it burns like frybrids smell like fries?

This, inquiring minds need to know. TBH, it's the first thing I thought!

I'll try and remember to sniff my exhaust, on regular diesel it doesnt smell of anything but I'll try and see if I can find a hint of woodland. ;)

Don't try it in a closed garage, with a hosepipe.

Can't build houses out of algae either. Well, at least not good houses. The forest must be cut anyways, this is just using more of it.
