It's time for a cheaper sports car.

Rust accounted for many of the ones that escaped the driftdiots.

You said you wanted back seats?

It seems like your area has a lot of Salvage title Mustangs. Or is that for all cars out there?

WRX?

It's quite common.

Unfortunately I totally despise that generation of Mustang. Which is too bad because on paper it's really nice looking.

Again good on paper but I do not trust Subarus or their owners.

What about Trans Am or Camaro's?

Have you driven that generation of Mustang?

I've had a few friends over the years who've owned them over the years. The second gen ones (both bug eyed and updated) are pretty damn strong with only the clutch being any kind of weak point. As long as you find a stock one, you'll be fine. Especially coming from an RX.

The Mk2 Mr2 has some suspension aftermarket, but most of the stuff out there is for the Turbo drivetrain. The nonturbo drivetrain is pure Camry (2.2L 5S-FE engine and matching transmission) so that does make it easier to maintain, but it is actually rather tedious to drive, being heavier than you'd like and not as powerful as you'd like. I would seriously advocate the Mk3 MR2, which despite being a soft-top is ~200-lb lighter than a contemporary Miata and slightly more powerful, and brilliantly chuckable and fun. Unfortunately for your requirements the hardtop was never officially imported into the US and you can only get them for $2k plus from importers or resellers. Apart from this requirement it would be nigh perfect for your needs; in terms of aftermarket it certainly isn't a Miata, but there's enough suppliers out there to satisfy most if not all of your needs.

In the same vein, you could probably get a 350Z for cheaper. Higher chance of ricer abuse though.

I suspect any modern Nissan sports coupe will be just as much as the RX-8 to service.

I can't afford one anyway. They are over 10 grand here.

*Sigh* maybe a Miata really is the only practical choice.

Not really, no. The Nissans were built in more numbers and were far more popular. They have a large aftermarket.

What are S2000s going for? It's basically a better version of the Miata and it's faster than the RX-8. :D

No less than 14.5k round here. It was too much then and it's too much now.

I really need a raise.

God I was just looking at Miata parts, everything is around half of what the RX-8 parts cost... or less.

Ahem... Per Edmunds, the Spyder weighs just 85lbs more than my NB Miata and has two less horsepower (and six more torques). :p

 Owning a Miata is ridiculously inexpensive.

*mumbles* When you live in the USA.

:(

I've heard Mustangs are good.

What about a 350z? Little heavier than the RX-8, but more powerful and they can be found for absurdly cheap.

edit: Just saw that it was already suggested. However, you could buy one in Texas for much less, then road trip it back to California. :)

Mustang parts are cheaper still.

I seriously doubt that. My rotors are around $30 a pop. High performance pads were under $40 total, iirc. High performance summer tires, $360 shipped. New wheels, $400. Don't underestimate small Japanese cars when it comes to affordable parts.
