Yes, Jack Thompson is still a flaming douche-canoe. This time he has written a open letter to the mother of Take-Two Studios' CEO.

When will the BAR get off their ass and disbar this fuckwit? He's an embarrassment, even to the worst ambulance-chasers.

Re: Your Son, Strauss Zelnick

Dear Mrs. Zelnick:

Your son, as you may know (or maybe you don?t know), is Chairman of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc., whose most popular video games are the Grand Theft Auto murder simulator games banned in some countries but sold to children here.
Your son last week was reported to have said the following about Grand Theft Auto IV, due to be released Tuesday, April 29:
?We?ve already received numerous [GTA IV] reviews, and to a one, they are perfect scores. My mom couldn?t write better reviews??
Taking your son?s thought, I would encourage you either to play this game or have an adroit video gamer play it for you. Some of the latter gamers are on death row, so try to find one out in the civilian population who hasn?t killed someone yet.

What you will see in your son?s game, if this iteration of GTA is anything like its predecessors, is incredible interactive violence aimed at police officers (whom you can shoot in the head and see the blood spray), innocent bystanders (whom you can run over with your car just for the heck of it), and of course the plentiful female prostitutes you can have sex with and then filet with a knife or stomp with your feet in order to get your money back. Experts note that the recent plethora of cop killings is caused in part by your darling son?s entrepreneurial energy. There are three policemen dead in Alabama because of Grand Theft Auto. I was on 60 Minutes about it. I hope Strauss has provided you with a flat screen tv to see the grief of the bereaved families that fills the screen.

The pornography and violence that your son trafficks in is the kind of stuff that most mothers would be ashamed to see their son putting into the hands of other mothers? children, but, hey, your son Strauss has recently assured the world that he is ?a Boy Scout, everybody knows that.? I?d love to see the merit badges that Scout Troop handed out. Is there a Ted Bundy merit badge? If so, your loving son deserves one now. It should be red and green, for obvious reasons.

With Passover having just come and gone, it is appropriate to note the following from the Old Testament, Proverbs 22:6:
?Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.?

Mrs. Zelnick, did you train up your son, Strauss, to make millions of dollars by pushing Mature-rated video games to children? Any kid can go right to little Strauss? corporate web site and buy GTA IV with no age verification. Strauss is even marketing the new Grand Theft Auto IV on World Wrestling Entertainment tv shows seen by millions of kids. If you trained up Strauss to do this, then shame on you.
But maybe the explanation for your son?s corporate sociopathy is to be found in Old Testament Proverb 29:15: ?The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.? Maybe you, Mrs. Zelnick, were so taken by your handsome son that you spared the rod and spoiled the child. That would explain why he has brought you, by the way he presently acts, ?to shame.?
There?s another mother you would do well to talk to. Mrs. Crump in Alabama had a son who was a police officer. He?s now dead because a teenaged boy unwittingly trained himself to kill him on Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. She has a grief she carries every day that only a mother can know. There are other such mothers in the heartland of America whose inhabitants your son simply sees as commercial targets.
Your son, this very moment, is doing everything he possibly can to sell as many copies of GTA IV to teen boys in the United States, a country in which your son claims you raised him to be ?a Boy Scout.? More like the Hitler Youth, I would say.
Happy Mother?s day, Mrs. Zelnick, which this year is May 11, two weeks after your son unleashes porn and violence upon other mothers? boys. I?m sure you?re very proud.

Sincerely, Jack Thompson

I emailed Mr. Thompson who did in fact confirm that he sent this letter, though he sent it to the lawyers representing Strauss Zelnick. In his own words:

I sent it to Strauss Zelnick?s lawyer. I have no idea who his mother is or where she is. You?re familiar with the concept of ?shame,? right? He can show it to his mother or not, but of course he won?t because he wouldn?t want his mother to know what he does and how he harms other people?s kids. Can you even grasp the concept?
Jack Thompson, Attorney

:wall: Its not the gamer maker's fault that parents allow their children to buy/play M rated games.

Maybe I can use my skills I learned in San Andreas to make Jack Thompson go away... :p

Jack Thompson drives me much further towards the idea of killing somebody than video games ever have. Fortunately, the only person who'd end up bludgeoned to death with a toaster would be Jack.

*shakes head...

we let douchebags like this have a voice, why?

Umm, Mr Thompson :

IT'S JUST A GAME. GET A FREAKING LIFE

Thank you

I thought you meant Jack Thompson the Australian actor.

People are always screaming for parents to take more responsibility, he has a point. Would have been better with more humour and less religious fervor.

Games are no different from movies. You wouldn't want your kid seeing Saw, so why would you buy them GTA?

Blame the parents.

They need to make an extra mission in GTA4 to kill "a fictional well known attorney", that would really piss him off.

Actualy it's a proven fact that watching movies has a worse effect on "kids these days" than games have.

I guess it's something to do with the fact that people sometimes re-enact movies, but not so much games.

So SAW is worse than GTA!

Cinemas can get fined if they let 15 year olds see a 18; bars can be charged if they sell drinks to underagers.

Shouldn't the same happen to games?

I mean, I agree entirely that the parents should take responsibility and interest in what their kid is playing. It may be that there are some 15 year olds perfectly mature enough to play it yet some 19 year olds who aren't.

I also agree entirely that Jack Thompson is a giant c**t.

However, I'm fairly sure the UK games rating system (at least) is merely 'recommended' and not actually enforceable...

This man has probably never played a computer game in his life. He needs to cool down and try some of these games, to see if he's that entitled to be bitter about them. I suspect that when he was young he never even got a game cartridge or something like that, and thinks now that we can't enjoy ourselves. Just like Jezza said about the Health&Safety people.

Mate, get a life that has some fun in it.

I really wish I had 1337 bank hacking skills. It seems like such a good idea to take every last bit of money that Jack Thompson has and give it to some kids in Africa or something.

Or, even better, take one underprivileged individual from far away, and give him all of Jackos money, possesions, etc. and stick that sad excuse for a human being in the middle of the Sahara.

I'm flabbergasted that this man is still allowed to live, let alone hold a license to practice law.

I don't think it's law here as the ESRB was formed by game companies to monitor the content of games to avoid government monitoring but most game retailers have a policy of not selling M rated games to those who are younger than 18. I know a lot of stores require id to by an M rated game, I've personally seen it happen at Walmart and Bestbuy.

EDIT: Still at the end of the day the parent has the say what games their child plays, it's the parents responsibility. If you don't want your kid playing a game either don't buy it for them or don't let them play if they some how bought it themselves.

It really irritates me when people blame violent video games for all of society's ills. It is done because it's easy to do. Let's not spend millions of dollars and many years trying to evaluate the root cause of school violence and violence against police officers. That would require actual effort. No. We need an instant scapegoat.

I'm sure that I'm not the only one here who thinks this, but I doubt this man actually cares about violent video games themselves. It seems to me that he is merely seeking more attention for himself and attempting to build his reputation as the lawyer to whom people should go for a class-action suit when a school shooting almost-inevitably happens again.

To blame violent video games for the violence that goes on in society is too easy. What about every person who has ever picked up a gun who didn't pick up a mouse and keyboard beforehand? Why did they do it? What about people who have played first-person shooters every day for years but have never picked up a gun? Why didn't they do it?

I'll admit I'm no psychoanalyst, but I'd bet good money that anybody who ever got an idea to kill people from a video game already had some kind of underlying trauma or mental condition. If they didn't act out their violent urges based on video games, they would have found some other inspiration.
