James May's company to close after ex-Top Gear team join forces

Sounds like it's all about taxes really, nothing that notable. The BBC likely paid his company instead of him directly for his services and since he was the sole owner of the company, it was effectively the same thing but with some tax benefit.
 
There is no real tax benefit unless you dont ever withdraw the money. Otherwise its pretty much the same being self employed or limited company

I can't speak for the UK, but here in Canada that is definitely not true, and I suspect the same for the US as well.
