Loveparade 2010: 20 people dead :(

The lessons of multiple pile ups seem not have been learnt. It seems to me that there is far too much fake Health and Safety and not enough effective Health and Safety. We seem to have loads of bullies running around telling us we can't do this or that which is only slightly risky and our own choice and no one really risk engineering and sorting this stuff out!

We have had numbers of incidents over the years mainly at football matches (First one I recall was Ibrox) and Sheffield was terrible - why is this stuff still happening? Makes me even more Grumpy - that was not a nice thing to see, those poor people.

How such disasters are still possible? Easy answer:

Because the last time was too long ago and too far away and nothing like that ever happened here. We see news of mass panics on TV in other countries and shake our heads about it, because "that could never happen here".

If things went well for too long, it makes organizers think nothing can go wrong, even if they violate regulations, laws, rules or common sense. And then such a disaster happens.

It has a pattern really. I'm thinking of the Eschede train disaster for example back in the late 1990's. Sure, those were completely different cirumstances and events but the pattern, which lead to the disaster, are similar: Rules are broken, safety misgivings ignored and everyone baths in a false sense of security.

Yeah in the Argentine case which I mentioned earlier, happened 6 years ago almost, the trials are over and most of the people who were found guilty were the city council people who are responsible for approving and monitoring clubs and their safeties, plus the owner of the club. So yeah, if in Argentina justice was made, then expect organizers and city officials will be held responsible, assuming that the German judicial system is much better than the Arg. one.

Oh my gods, double posting and thread necromancing all at once!

It's been almost a year now since the tragedy, and pretty much now the ARD shows the documentation "Die letzte Loveparade" (The last Love Parade). It will be shown again tomorrow, 20:15h, on WDR, and I guess it'll be on ARD Mediathek for the usual week. Just in case anyone is interested.

Meanwhile, the newspapers had stories today about a report by the office of the district attourney saying the whole event having been so badly planned that the permission by the city of Duisburg had been unlawful, and was only carried out out of political interest. This will hopefully lead to some people being charged, although I guess the mayor who was most probably the personified "political interest" won't be one of them.

Obviously if Techno Viking had been there, none of this would of happened.
