Mouses

Don't even need to do that. Just turn the mouse off and give the buttons a few good, solid hits. That'll loosen up some of the gunk and make the switches not double click/not click anymore.

The contacts wear out in the switches. They're "only" rated for about 1million clicks. They are a wear-n-tear part and it's very common for them to go bad on a high-quality mouse - because the mouse was good enough to last for over 1million clicks.
 
Those pics are my pics from my personal wireless MX700 that I fixed a couple years ago. The mouse is now 10 years old this month. I already tried everything, cleaning, swapping contacts, I even went so far as to swap my left and middle switches entirely - until eventually all of my switches were double-clicking. Finally I broke down and bought new ones.
