I got tasked (well, it was my idea) to cover a biggish building with wi-fi. The place has a really basic ADSL connection with a wi-fi modem on the second floor. This is a non-profit so I'm trying to get away under 200 euros including everything.

I was planning to run an ethernet cable down to the first floor, install a wi-fi access point, which I then would range-extend with another one via WDS.

Is ZyXel stuff any good at all these days? It looks like they offer what I'm looking for at a reasonable price, but I need it to be reliable. Dualband 2.4/5 BGN at the same time wouldn't hurt either.

I'm not sure if you are able to get Engenius products in Finland, but I've had great reliability and performance with Engenius products, especially the business side of things. I have two long range outdoor access points being used to connect to buildings together and haven't had to touch them in over a year and a half, set and forget. They are more difficult to set up though as the menus are not geared towards consumers/households, ie no wizards.

Check out Engenius' website: http://www.engenius-europe.com/

How many clients? What material does the signal need to go through?

Even if you don't plan on supporting a Mac I recommend Apple's Airport products if you can manage the cost. The range is good, and I've never heard of there being any security problems with them.

Very few clients, it's about 1/100th the use that a normal home wifi gets. I'm just doing this because we get shit 3G reception inside.

And the material is, well, air mostly. :) It's a huge open space. I was looking at Airports myself (that's what I'm going to go for once my WNDR3700 dies) but I just realized I need 3 of them and not 2 as I originally planned.
