Not sure if this has already been posted, but just seen that the planning application for Dunsfold has been approved and the airfield is to close. Guessing TopGear will be needing to find a new home.

Dunsfold houses: Plan for 1,800 homes approved

A plan to build 1,800 new homes at Dunsfold Aerodrome has been approved.

Waverley Borough Council's planning committee narrowly gave the go-ahead for the plans on Wednesday.
Opponents to the development of the site said the homes were not needed. The council said the new jobs would be created on the brownfield site.
The aerodrome is currently home to Dunsfold Business Park which accommodates more than 100 businesses employing more than 800 people.
Dunsfold Aerodrome is the largest brownfield site in Waverley and is neither in the greenbelt or the Surrey Hills area of outstanding natural beauty.
Jim McAllister, Dunsfold Park chief executive, said: "The development of Dunsfold Aerodrome will provide homes for young families currently priced out of the area, direct development away from green fields, create new jobs and deliver a range of new community facilities and infrastructure improvements."
The planning application was approved by 10 votes to eight at the council's planning committee meeting.

The owners have been told for the development to go ahead they must improve roads in the area to "mitigate the impact of traffic generated by the development", and provide a bus service in perpetuity.

Part of the development must provide affordable housing, the committee said.
There will also need to be a health centre on site, public open spaces and sports facilities as a condition of the development being allowed.

Young families will be able to afford a new built home?
For any new housing development to secure planning approval a percentage of the homes must be built to a certain price (based on prevailing prices in the area) which would be potentially affordable to those on lower incomes. Housing prices in the UK are currently so inflated due to excess demand that if you aren't already on the properly ladder you need to be a couple earning jointly about 5x the national average salary to afford the deposit and the related mortgage.

This rule was brought in so that teachers, nurses and other vital workers in the community would be able live within a reasonable distance of the workplace without being raped for rents but in reality it's aimed at all those on lower incomes. It's also design to stop the evolution of ghettos of poorer families with high crime rates, high unemployment and low education and skill sets.

It's a Band Aid on a GSW but it shows the right sort of thinking.

Sounds like a step in the right direction.

New houses in UK are built of cheap materials, with the primary aim being profit.
Older housing stock (Victorian terraces) were built well, by craftsmen, and their price reflects this.

They#ve been trying to do this since I was working on Top Gear. The political climate has changed a lot since then, we have a worsening housing crisis and new houses have to be built. That said, I think it's a bit of a shame, but houses are a lot more profitable than semi-disused airfields.

Maybe having to find a new track will help give new TG it's own identity and move it away from the old version.

My brother has that issue with his 1920s house. also, fuck balloon construction.

On topic... hopefully this will help give TG an identity that's better than what it is now.

Screw dead Canadians. All they need to do is find one, live Great Crested Newt and the whole plan will be kyboshed.

The dead Canadian is a non-story. I am part of the History Society trying to protect the aerodrome, the WW2 buildings and the runway. The TopGear track will be ripped up unless the runway is protected. Historic England are looking at Listing the runway. The planners are considering making the runway and hangers part of a Conservation Area. You can help achieve this Conservation Area by commenting to support it on our website: https://dunsfoldairfield.org/top-gear/

Hi,

If any of you want to save the Top Gear Track, now is the moment. The Public Inquiry on the future development of Dunsfold Aerodrome started yesterday. This Thursday pm (20th July) and Friday am (21st July) is when members of the public can speak in the Inquiry to say what they feel about losing the airfield. It would be a good opportunity to mention the importance of the Top Gear track. Just turn up at either 2pm Thursday or 10 am Friday. The Inquiry is at Waverley Borough Council offices,The Burys, Godalming Surrey GU7 1HR

Funny you should say. There was a house at follow through in 1942 and it was lifted by the Canadian Army Engineers and moved half a mile out the way behind five catapillar diggers to allow them to build the taxi ways that are now Follow Through. My website shows maps of the original design of the taxiway.
