I learned to drive in a pair of small cars (Saab 9-3, Toyota Matrix) - so what do I do when it's time to buy my own car?

Buy a freakin' huge car, that's what.

It's a 1995 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight Regency Elite, maroon with maroon leather interior. In a miracle of modern engineering, all the 1990s-era GM electronics..actually work. Really. Twilight Sentinel, remote locks, trip computer, VFD electronic instrument panel....it's all working.

(Please do let me know if further proof of actual ownership is required - I figured that the picture of me in it was enough!)

Im sorry, but that is hideous.

In every way.

Atleast it came out of the factory that way..

Seems like the perfect first car to me. Big, comfortable, probably not very fast, room for lots of friends, etc. No point buying a sportscar or something old/rare, when statistically your first car will most likely get crashed.

Yes, it is. Thankfully, I spend most of my time on the inside, where I can't see the ugly.
Also, my grandfather had one, except in gray. They look worse in gray.

Indeed. It definitely isn't fast.....doesn't get up to highway speeds very quickly at all. Don't really care at this point. It's very comfortable on the (slow) journey to 60mph, though!

The Blues Brothers called, they want their hat and sunglasses back. Also, needz moar maroon! :D

Unfortunately though, the ugly continues on the inside :p

I agree that it is a decent first car though. My brothers first car was a 1991 Ford Fairmont, and it became affectionately known as the "land barge". It was massive, had a lovely (cough) velour interior, even the doors were covered in velour, it had electronic climate control, trip computer, 4 speaker stereo cassette (!) and a slushbox. And was RWD. And for all these things, it was a strangely lovable, if honestly pretty awful, car.

So I wish you good times with your first car.

Yo, dawg, when you gonna get sum hos to go wit dat pimpmobile?

I'd rather have this:

That's about the size of a Chevy Aveo, yeah?
I would, but I'm too tall for it. My legs sort of get stuck under the steering wheel at a point that makes it hard to operate the pedals.

All the pimps around here drive Caddys, dawg, whatchu talkin' bout Willis?

Seems like a solid first car to me.

From what I hear on this forum the 3800 series motor is quite good too.

No, it's actually one size smaller.. Think Kia Picanto. It's probably even worse in every way too.

Anyway :), enjoy your car, it seems to be in a very good shape for a 90's GM product.

My first car was a land yacht ('86 Towncar) it was awful but I had fun with it.

You should call that roadside assistance number.

You should call that roadside assistance number.

I called it yesterday. Oldsmobile's customer-service voice-recognising robot is still active. However, considering that I didn't actually want roadside assistance, I attempted to get to 'general information' - and was informed that the offices are closed, please call back when the office is open.

I'll try it again on Monday - I just want to know if by 'offices closed' they mean 'closed because it's the weekend' or 'closed because you can't buy an Oldsmobile anymore!'

It actually is a Chevy Matiz, or rather its predecessor.

b2t; that Oldsmobile looks likes its named, old car made by old people for old people, despite its size its FWD and looks like a oversized small midleclass car. And I guess the Fuel-economy is also poor isnt it?

Dude, you're young and have a your whole live infront of you, get a car inwhich you'll have fun now, not when you get your midlife crises. ;)

Having fun has nothing to do with the size/ability of the car. Have I mentioned the size of the back seat area? ;)

On a serious note - I bought this car because it was a good price ($2,000) and in excellent mechanical/appearance condition. It's certainly not an interesting car, but I intend to have fun in it. By going places. With the proper mindset, you could even have fun in a Volkswagen Beetle! (Furthermore, my friends have nicknamed me Captain Slow. Says a lot about my personality.)

As for the fuel economy....last time I punched the trip-computer on, it told me I was getting 23.6 miles per gallon. Yee-haw!

Ideal first car, I applaud you for actually buying a vehicle that places comfort at the top of its list; but I wouldn't consider it a land yacht.
