I think it was steam cleaned and then allowed to cool with the valves shut, so yes like a milk jug.

The observant will notice that it's not sitting on the rails. My vote is for some kind of safety demonstration.
 
No, but the question was how it happened. It's still an awesome display of the effects of pressure.
 
Nearly 15 PSI (aka 1 atmosphere) of atmospheric pressure on every inch of the surface will crush it like a beer can (assuming all the air is evacuated from inside the tank).

Edit: Found a vid of the event. Looks like they hooked it up to a vacuum line and invited spectators.

^To expand upon Blind_Io's post, atmospheric pressure (14.7 psi) works out to over one ton per square foot, or more than ten metric tonnes per square meter!
 
^It also shows you just how resilient the tube shape is to compression forces. It was fine right up until the point it buckled; if it were a box, for example, it would've gone much sooner, though more progressively.
