For what you seem to want, I'd suggest going with the Rustler, but you'd be surprised how much space you need to really enjoy something with that kind of speed. The 16th scale Revo uses the same chassis as the Slash, but with longer suspension arms and bigger tires, making it a little bit more stable. The Rustler is an excellent all-arounder, and while space may become a bit of a hindrance, if you get a chance to bring it to a track or something like a construction yard(freakin awesome) you'll be able to do all sorts of crazy shit. Bring spare parts. The truck is very durable, but as soon as a hobby shop is too far away to be worthwhile, you'll smash into something large and immovable.
 
The one thing that appeals to me about the Slash VXL is that it doesn't require LiPo batteries to get the max speed out of it. Seems like the LiPo chargers are quite pricey (plus you have to buy a power supply in order to use them from a wall?). However, I think you are right that the Rustler VXL would be more ideal for me and more stable for bashing around. If I can get decent performance out of the Rustler with just NiHM for now, and if I feel like I need more speed then I can always get a LiPo charger down the road when I have more cash.

Also, it would be really cool if the Rustler VXL came with a battery and charger like the Slash VXL does.

Thanks for all the advice and tips everyone. I placed an order this morning. I couldn't afford a Li-Po charger + power supply for now, but I can always move up to it down the road. Here is what I ended up going with, should be able to get up to at least 45+mph with this setup:

That radio was $170... lol. And that's considered a cheap one.

Now I have to wait for the car to come in, along with the batteries and other stuff.

Jeffy, not all LiPo chargers need power supplies, but not having one built in saves a bit of money, and makes charging batteries off a car battery easy when you're not near an outlet. Also, I'm not sure how experienced you are with rc, but you will find that 45 mph is very fast once you're doing something other than speed passes.

I had a hard time finding a "good" LiPo for under $100, so I just went with a $40 NiMH for now.

I used to have a nitro RC about 10 years ago, but I only had it for a couple weeks until it broke and then ended up selling it because I needed the money, but I do know that 45 will be pretty fast, so I probably won't need to go to LiPo, at least for a while any way :D

That one is 30, and with a cheap power supply you can get a functional LiPo only charger for less than 80. It won't charge quickly, but it will get them charged correctly. And yes, 45mph is plenty fast, any more power and you'll be doing flips off the line lol.

That's the majority of the cars I have now. I used to have a nitro 8th scale, but just didn't like having to do all the pre-run stuff that is associated with having a nitro powered vehicle. The 24/28th scales I have on the top are very good indoor runners too.

Yeah, I did see the cheaper models, but I figured if I was going to go LiPo, I would want a quality charger/discharger that I could really trust and with an LCD screen and such, so I might as well wait until I can afford something nicer, and like you said 45mph should be enough for now and I should be able to go that fast with this NiMH battery.

I have the same engine running in my vxl, but I don't have the hump battery. It goes around 30-35 mph, which is more than enough speed. You will definitely have some fun with it.


I'm about to buy a Volcano SV for $120. should I do it? I just want a cheap nitro truck.

You have a Stampede, right? What battery and pinion gear do you use?

Looks like the Rustler is about 5mph faster overall, probably because it's lighter. I'm hoping the 8.4V battery will give me a little extra kick too.

Seems like a good deal on the Volcano :)

Turns out the Volcano is knackered.

I have the stock pinion gear, I can check which one it is. I will also look at the battery, but I think its a 6000 (I will check the other numbers on it). Right now, I'm looking at a Losi Micro T or a touring car.


edit: I only found 6000 written on it

Just to remind jeffy that the charger in question also requires a balancer, unless you want to blow the batteries up. If the cells inside the battery aren't evenly matched the battery is amost certainly going to die or explode.

Oh, and the LiPo batteries don't need to be discharged like the normal NiMh batteries. Another advantage about LiPos:cool:

It's not completely necessary to have a balancer, but it's a very good idea to have one.

For those who are wondering, cell balancer/charger works by charging cells individually, which results in a complete and full charge for each cell, rather than in a series like normal chargers would, making the cells slightly different in their voltages, which could cause problems in the long run. I don't have one yet, so I could theoretically run them for a good number of runs before having to get one, but I need one and will probably get one eventually. Luckily, for a 2 cell like mine, it's fairly cheap.

I need to cycle all my other batteries, they've died over the years :lol:.

Mine doesn't either (I have the black widow one). I just run my car till the battery dies (typically leaves 5% battery), then I hook it up to the charger. Have not had any problem. If you wanted to (I've seen it done), you can make your own discharger by connecting a female input to a bunch of light bulbs so the bulbs will make the battery discharge.
