Autoblog: Report: EU working to ban gas and diesel-powered cars by 2050

...and what if the gas supply stops working? :tease:

No big surprise if you're going to run above-ground pipes with fibreglass insulation. Frozen lines FTL.
Hehe good point actually. So you HAVE been to my home country :p

Seriously though, we had a badly insulated district heating pipe under the sidewalk across the street. Net result? No need to plow or grit unless in loads of snow/really cold
All our heating pipes are in the ground, in order for them to freeze up they would have to break down for weeks before getting that cold - in that case the weeks-long breakdown would be the bigger problem.
There even is a 5m-diameter 1.4km long tunnel under the fjord to supply the west coast with tasty heat directly, 130?C in the winter and 70?C in the summer.

Not pictured: Smaller networks surrounding the big one.

That's pretty awesome actually :)

Central heating makes my communisme detection meter jump to the redline <_<

 No doubt some people actually do believe that.

LOL you and me both man :) Then again I had a bad experience :p

Actually somewhat a funny story, I was at college and this dude came up to me asking me how I feel about socialism/communism and to sign their petition or w/e. My response "Dude I'm from Russia, the fuck you think?" he left me alone right there and then :)

Next thing you know people will be getting electricity and water from a central grid.

wait.....

That proposal still scares me, and I'll tell you why. Yes, Ford's report was grossly overblown, but the fact that this EU subcommittee was discussing it at all mean they are at least somewhat serious about it. In mass groups, even the craziest ideas are "investigated" and often times implimented on one level or another, often never seen.

Best example I could think of is during the Cold War many of the scientists who designed the H-Bomb were tasked with creating a new weapon to defeat the Russian during the at that time enevitable WWIII. One of their ideas was a "Gonorrhea Bomb", so that the Russians would use up all there antibiotics on their soldiers treating the disease and have none left for war wounds. This weapon was developed, tested, and depending on who you believe, approved for use. Oh course the Cold War never erupted so we'll never know.

But if an idea like that can be allowed to develop, don't think the EU (or more likely the current batch of morons in Washington) haven't seriously entertained the idea of an ICE ban, whether in urban areas or across the board.

At least the German goverment has already banned most older vehicles (those not complying with certain emission standards) from city centers. They say it's for the environment, but i prefer to call it the "you have to buy a new car" law, especially as it convienetly came into effect once cash for clunkers ran out. This will repeat itself.
If all the mass-market manufacturers got electric cars in their lineup and no one buys them someone will scream "for the environment" and ban traditional combustion engines from city centers in order to make every commuter buy another new car. The exchangeable license plate (valid for two or more cars, due to be introduce this summer) is a first legislative step in this direction.

But as long as Ford of Europe, VW and GM Europe are opposed of this, we're in the clear. These things have never been for the benefit of the environment, but for the carmaker's benefit.

 The Umweltzone existed before the Umweltpr?mie was even considered.

Nope, you're wrong: The "second phase" of the Umweltzone ban, affecting most newer cars, came into effect January 1st, 2010 in most German cities.
But even if you were right and once the wave of new car aquisitions forced by the Umweltzone (the ban of higer-emission cars from city centers) had ended, the government brought in the Umweltpr?mie (cash for clunkers) to get sales back up, it would be obvious that both legislations did nothing good for the environment and lots of good for the carmakers.

I'm not saying it did anything good for the environment. All I'm saying is that the Umweltzone scheduling had nothing to do with the Umweltpr?mie. The bump up to green only in Berlin for example probably was planned long before the Umweltpr?mie was in effect.

And all i'm saying that both were car buying incentives brought about by the carmaker lobby. What people here tend to forget is that at least mass-market manufacturers don't care about cars (and hardly ever did). They care about selling cars. And if a pro e-car law makes them sell more cars, they'll be all for it. ;)
