I am a stick virgin
{ giggles }

I like playing with other peoples' sticks.
Yeah, *thinks about radio ads claiming "push, pull, tow it in, guaranteed 3K for your trade!"* That might not be a bad idea. And yes, if the car for some reason wouldn't manage to be taken in on trade, I'd be glad to list it as a LeMons car.
Holy crap! That's way more than we got for the Failtima as a trade. $3K could get you some pretty awesome beaters, too. I smell a winnar.

I like this old lolvo idea. Those are pretty indestructable, plus I dig the brick. Look at how this one survived getting flopped on its roof, for pete's sake: http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2011/01/wont-someone-put-this-race-volvo-back-on-the-street/

Calling SteveLevin...doesn't he have a brick that's still going strong?

I wish more people let me play with their sticks :(

Ladies... :wicked: jk, jk...I'm not that creepy/pervy...honest!

Resale value: Eh so i was exaggerating by 1K on the whole "we'll give you anything" thing...but still 2k for THAT isn't bad at all. Believe me, I won't complain

Volvo: haha nice! I haven't wrecked my car at all yet (Shocking considering I got my licence at 18....) but I'm sure that if/when I do..the lolvo would be a safe choice indeed. :)

Also, I've added Ford Escort and Mazda Protege to the list. The Protege seems nicer inside compared to the Escort though, even on high trims. :)

Thanks everyone for the suggestions so far, it's been a great help.

Hmm, how about this:

Granted I wouldn't choose anything fancy (no turbos or anything like that) but it's extremely safe and I like the size (more wagon than CUV)

Thoughts?

If you want snow mobility, it still doesn't have enough ground clearance and observed MPG on some of those can be as low as 17mpg - yes, with the four cylinder. If you're going to do that, just save a bunch of money and go buy a beater WD21 Pathfinder. About the same size, about the same power and fuel economy, one hell of a lot tougher, cheaper to buy and maintain, etc., etc.

Blah. Blah. BLAH.

Dude, you have NO legs to stand on when it comes to winter driving. None. Here is your sign, exit is to the left.

Uhh....

What are you waiting for? Goodbye, Spectre!

I've seen Foresters handle some tough terrain in wintertime so it's pretty capable, more so than any wagon shy of an Allroad.

Bah, you can get a Disco for cheap. My dad bought one for around a grand and besides the engine misfiring like hell (and ATF in the break system ) it runs fine. :p

I am sure it does fine if a FWD beetle with about 3" of clearance has never gotten stuck before :p

Um, I refer you to prior quotes by Katwalk and others in MA who speak of getting stuck or being forced to wait for the plow and Blind_Io, who has had to pull snow-stuck Subarus out on a regular basis in Utah.

Also, who says I haven't lived in places where it snows? Such as, oh, Park City, Utah?

We've had near-record snowfall this year, and there has been only a handful of days where I would have had to wait until slightly later in the morning before going out in my sportscar.... the streets are plowed very regularly. This last snowstorm I drove to work as normal.

Foresters offer just enough capability for you to get stuck worse than most normal cars. And one of the most common post topics on the Subie Forester forums: "Help, got stuck in snow!" (A friend of mine was looking to get one for Park City recently. She bought a used Liberty CRD instead.)

the problem is, a lot of people go "I have awd, I'll be fine in the snow," and then they get stuck because they have all seasons on them.

Yeah, but from camping out in Park City off and on, it's fun to watch the people with Subarus who cleverly put snow tires on, snootily claim that they're just as good in the winter as, say, the old Jeep Grand Wagoneer (that's oh so popular there even now) while getting far better gas mileage and thus "Saving The Earth"... who then go get high centered on snow and ice and have to be rescued by a real SUV, with real ground clearance - such as the aforementioned Jeep. (Edit: Gee, I don't know why I would mention this... It couldn't be, oh, personal experience or anything.)

Now, if you don't care about snow mobility, you still have the problem that the Forester doesn't get very good fuel economy in the real world - and if you weren't caring about the mobility issue, why would you buy a half-arsed Legacy wagon with a taller roof tacked on and a suspension lift in the first place? Just buy the Legacy wagon in that case.

When I say "stuck" I mean "I live on a very steep hill and going onto the street in any car right now would be epically retarded", not literally stuck. There is a very large difference between being "stuck" by looking at a plow skid out on your street and say "oh maybe I should not leave" and your car actually getting stuck.

I've never been snowed in at my house (driveways slants slightly down towards road). I did however help someone who was stuck at my school. The problem? He parked on 6" of snow, then got plowed in, then waited a few days till the snow reached a concrete-like consistency. Long story short, he didn't have the ground clearance ( or the proper tires/skill) to navigate trough this.

WD21's are really nice trucks, no doubt about that. Just one problem, up here's they've all rotted out.

There are plenty of rust free examples down here, cheap. :D And transport costs aren't that much, either.

I'll have to keep that in mind for when the 9000 croaks.

I totally dug out a kia rio on south on friday
They apparently suck ass in the snow and it's hard to find snow tires for them, I guess they have some stupid tiny wheels.

Ganador, ganador, cena de pollo. Overconfidence + crappy driving = that's trouble whereever you are and whatever you're doing.

Besides, the Saturn doesn't exactly have much ground clearance, so the Forester's an improvement. I like this idea, TBH.

(Obligatory disclaimer: I am from Texas and don't drive in snow. :p)
