Rickhamilton620's 1992 plastic appliance....

Rick, I would check this Avalon out:

So...is your total budget $2,500? Cos you know you have to pay sales tax, registration and all that...

No tax if he buys private.

Edit: I would also check these out:

2001 Elantra
1995 Accord

1997 Corolla (high miles, but it'll run forever)
2001 Santa Fe (I heard good things about these and they look pretty cool)
1997 Altima
1994 Camry Coupe (needs a bit of work, but looks like it's in good condition)

Oh my. 142k mi on that Accord. Low miles. Avalons can be found for cheap sometimes. People undervalue them compared to the Camry.

Or it?s a good last attack on a professionals seller price ... "I?ve only got 2xxx$, you?ll have to go down with the price so I can afford the car and the tax" ...

Is that how it works in Canada? Because it sure as hell is not like that in the US.

Most likely there will be a tax issued when the car is registered under his name. That is how it works in CO.

A private seller can't charge tax in Ontario, only a registered business can (not sure about the rest of Canada).

It's not the seller that charges you here...it's the DMV when you go to register the car. (they ripped me off around $500 as sales tax for my new Volvo)

Well, when you go to register a car here, you just pay the registration fee (there might be tax on that, but not on the car).

I recently bought a car, the MTO taxes a few things. The value you paid for the car(this is HST, a big 13%), the plate if you don't have one and the registration fee.

Oh really? Didn't know that. :dunno:

I don't recall paying tax on my car...Think because we did the deal as a gift....i probably shouldn't be saying that out loud should I? :p

In any case, the damn thing was only 800 bucks. I'll see how much tax is on used vehicles here.

All those seem to be great options ilpav. The Santa Fe ad seems sketchy though :S The corolla has my eye because it appears to hit all my must haves: Power options, reliable, gas sipper, etc.

The Avalon would be great. My uncle owns a first gen and it's a very nice car IMO. I'll keep it in mind as an option. The accord seems good too but I'd have to learn stick...which could be an issue as I'm not terribly sure that my uncle knows stick...and he'd have to show me as driving to mechanicsburg just to learn stick with my dad or stepmom (they notably owned a new 95 Escort stick sedan...so I know they have experience) is a bit impractical.

I can't really look yet beyond clicking around on CL because I don't have the money quite yet (school refund disbursement = slow process) but as soon as I do I'm off to the races.

Here's the pic of the latest thing that's broken:

Taken right off the PennDOT website:
SALES TAX
Pennsylvania sales tax is 6 percent of the purchase price or the current market value of the vehicle. (7 percent for residents of Allegheny County and 8 percent for City of Philadelphia residents.)
If a motor vehicle is taken by the seller as a trade in, the tax is imposed upon the difference between the purchase price of the motor vehicle purchased and the value of the motor vehicle taken as a trade in by the seller.

Interesting, so I probably did pay tax then. Oh well, bad memories and all that. :p

Thanks.

In my experience with loan refunds. It took a few months, maybe October or November. I hope that isn't the case for you.

They said by end of september....but yeah the wait is frustrating at best, seeing all these great options disappear is frustrating.

With a coat hanger, and some JB WEld, that'd be an easy fix.

So, you paid $800 for this thing right, can I ask how many miles you've gotten out of it?

I don't know because the odometer broke sometime last year/this winter.

I have had the car for about 5 years (bought it when I was 18) and it's made many a trip from Ship to Mechanicsburg + York + Harrisburg. It's also been to Virginia twice.

More importantly though, how much have you spent keeping it running?

Also how is your car so broken when it is so young, it's not even 20 years old yet! :p

Lets just say more than what I paid for it. :S :p It was desperate times so it had to be done but in retrospect....:p

I know people who spend vast sums on cars they'll never make the money back on, but they do tend to be cars that are old enough to be appreciating in value. Hate to say it but the average Morris Marina is worth considerably more than your Saturn...

Although I know a chap my age who has spent upwards of ?2000 keeping his '67 Rover 2000SC (ironically a car that has a reputation of being reliable and well built) running for the past year not including the purchase price or fuel (and at 15-20mpg that adds up). So you can take some comfort in that... unless you've spent more in the last year in which case you should probably go and re-evaluate you car some more! :p
