Rotaries

Some reasons why I won't be buying a rotary any time soon:

[snip]

Everyone of those is an example of Darwin hard at work. Those are all modified cars running excessively rich and setting the bumper on fire. There are a few intelligent owners who try to avoid that.

Lucas Electronics never set the rear bumper and rear quarter EXTERIOR panels of a car on fire. Rotaries do that all by themselves.

Actually, I've seen a gas tank on an old Triumph rust, start leaking vapors into the trunk and one of the brake lights short. Needless to say the owner's next Triumph had fully redone wiring before he took it on the road.

No, because the apex seals would go in 9.3 seconds. :D

No turbo=no blown apex seal. :p

None of those RX8s are doing it for me. Too flashy.

No. That's a pic I've posted here before.

Besides, Texas has many perfectly straight deserted roads that one can safely take pictures on. :D

Too many perfectly straight roads.

You know of any good driving roads around Arlington? I haven't even had the chance to take my RX7 to some good roads yet.

I drove an RX8 the other day and it had an absolutely epic whine when it got up past about 4k revs, like a race car with a sequential. I thought it might be a problem with the car but I drove a 2nd one that did the same thing.

Is it transmission whine or is that the rotary?

This thread is going to make me do a damn rotary conversion on my mx-5... and I want a v6 or a damn turbo for it!

It's the Renesis and the way it's muffled. I think they sound like shit because of it. Normal rotaries may sound like a pack of weed wackers on the hunt, but better than that near ear piercing (yet at the same time quiet) racket the stock renesis makes.

You can get a 13b-rew for $2500 rebuilt.

If you're gonna do a swap, an LS2 is your best bet. Rotaries are great but the LS2 is just light years better than a 13B. And I like rotaries.

With my MG I hear no whine on mine with its straight pipe. So it isn't the engine.

The Renesis has a VERY different induction system, that is where the noise is coming from. It's a resonance harmonic.

What you mean Mazda has been developing the thing these last two decades :p. I stand corrected.

For the weight alone of one of those and it's turbos I'd be better off going with a stock LS1. It'll be more reliable.

You're talking to the guy who made a very long post about the weight vs power/torque output of engines in another thread. LS1's are cheaper and more plentiful and easier to swap than rotaries.

If for some reason I do put the money/time/effort into a swap I won't be doing an LS, or likely any v8. Just not what I want. A Mazda KL 2.5L v6 is only 10lbs heavier than the 1.8L in the miata and sounds wonderful and the Ford Duratec ain't too bad (but could sound better).

Though the sound of a Peripheral ported 13b would be pretty nice in a miata, not gain (much) weight and be a jump in power.

Mental......simply mental.

I talked to one of the few people who have attempted a KLZE swap and they were pretty much unanimous in saying that while it's a good motor, it isn't worth the effort to swap in. You're talking $6-10k just to swap in a motor that will only net you an 85hp gain while an LS2 would give you 285 more hp and weigh less than the KLZE swap all told.

If your don't want to do an LS swap, you don't do an LS swap. Nobody would logically put a rotary in a miata, but people do it anyways. Its something unique, its something special. Is that so impossible to understand? Same thing with the KLZE, its just a glorious sounding V6.
