That is right - never needed AC at all - US could do it all - so why did they bother with AC?
I overstated things a bit. The basic frame was AC (especially at the beginning). They also kept the same front coil rear leaf suspension But the car changed quite a bit as things progressed. The steering rack, fuel lines, transmission, the later Daytona Coupe body, etc, were not AC.
Of course things would have been different if Aston and Chevrolet didn't say no to Shelby.
There are people out there who think all Shelby Co. did was drop in a big engine. That is defiantly not the case.
The GTO was a fast car. Ferrari had good drives. Ferrari himself also had connections and was well established in the race scene (i.e. he was a cheating bastard).
