So, this car company with the most great cars

That is right - never needed AC at all - US could do it all - so why did they bother with AC?

I overstated things a bit. The basic frame was AC (especially at the beginning). They also kept the same front coil rear leaf suspension But the car changed quite a bit as things progressed. The steering rack, fuel lines, transmission, the later Daytona Coupe body, etc, were not AC.

Of course things would have been different if Aston and Chevrolet didn't say no to Shelby.

There are people out there who think all Shelby Co. did was drop in a big engine. That is defiantly not the case.

The GTO was a fast car. Ferrari had good drives. Ferrari himself also had connections and was well established in the race scene (i.e. he was a cheating bastard).

I saw Carroll Shelby make the comment about Ferrari - "they treated their drivers like shit".

My point is that some times one country can not do it all - and UK/US corroboration usually works out well. Well, when we had an industry before we shut it all down and bought all our stuff from China - er do not do that btw.

Thats not necessarily true

i think you missed the point i was making.

The question isn't "which car company is the greatest," it's "which car company has produced the most great cars?" That's purely a numbers game, sorry.

which was exactly my point. its a numbers game that doesnt mean anything. if you want you can change factors, such as minusing crap models or going to percentage of good versus bad etc, and it would probably change the outcome. and it still wont mean anything.

sorry for interrupting with my musings on the banality of the subject. i will leave you all to your continued ponderings. :)

Lotus (copied by mazda, tons of cars that have no bad reviews, designs suspensions and chassis for other firms)
just to name a few reason. My other choices, in no apparent order, Ford, Honda, BMW, Ferrari

I don't know it's already said but Spycker, the dutch company made a great car as wel!

Spycker Spyder

^ oh c'mon Spyker Cars only made like 3 cars, it isn't the company that made the most great cars, isn't it?

If it's purely mathematical, ie. a ratio of great cars per total models produced then it's going to be McLaren. (1 or 0.5 depending on if one includes the SLR or not)
If it isn't then the Ford consensus is probably right.
The TG chaps seem to have considered Lancia, as there's an ad on BBC2 featuring Clarkson and Hammond belting across a Welsh mountain road in a Stratos.

A lot of drivers hated Enzo. He played the factory drivers against each other, kept changing his favorite, etc. Ferrari drivers pushed themselves hard and a few died because of it. Shelby did race for Ferrari, I don't believe as a factory driver, so he would have experience with this.

For the curios he took 2nd place for Ferrari in the Carrera Panamericana (behind Graham Hill).

Of course. I agree. The Rover V8 is a good example. Rover fixed the engine and used it a great many cars. From what I've heard the MG ZT260 was a great car (British chassis, American engine).

And of course Lotus has been using Toyota engines to great effect recently.

Take it up with Clarkson, he started it. :p

Come on, it's got to be Dacia. :D

Sounds funny, despite the rep, the "classic" collection is all shite. I drive one, please trust me on that, it's a 60 design. Yeah i can pretty much fix it everywhere with a spanner and screwdriver but my god does that happen a lot of times...

What manufacturer has the most great cars?

I think it's Alfa Romeo.

^still fewer than Ford :)

Not a bad run though. All of their "normal" cars are either kind of interesting or unremarkable. All of their previous sporty cars that were designed properly are legends. Lancia was the first to use a V4, V6, and 5-speed transmission in their production vehicles, they championed the use of independent suspension, and were at one point the most successful manufacturer involved in rallying.

Ford might have them beat, but I feel like Lancia is the choice if you're feeling kind of quirky. Benz is also up there.

Oh and I forgot the Thema 8.32

It's a fairly sedate looking luxury sedan.

But you could get it with one of these (V8)

I don't see why so many people have said Ford.

If anything they do 'average' cars, cars that are generaly good enough to be good sellers but hardly great.
I mean they gave the Cosworth and the GT40 and to a lesser extent the Escort and Capri. But I find most Fords to be pretty dull, and not really worthy of being called "great".
I mean even the Mustang wasn't always great, granted it was a good car but only the more expensive models could be considered great...

Mustang is the most iconic pre oil crisis American muscle-car. That alone makes it one of the great.

That picture is from Netcarshow.com; to save you the trouble here's the bigger version of that picture.
