#2 you can laugh at. But #1 is more dangerous, and is more of the sort to forget to change their car's oil after 10,000 miles, leave it out in the rain constantly, ignore minor scratches and dents, and generally forget about their fine sports car. Why should they? After all, it's just another commodity, something that makes them look good that they can replace when something prettier comes out. Car enthusiasts can see themselves doing this to their grandmother's '88 Corolla, but they'll reel at doing this to a car they love. So it's understandable how we can obsess over this sort of thing, but #1ers won't get it.
I wonder if people who obsess over, say, toasters feel the same pain when we forget to clean out the bread crumbs at the bottom.
