Tesla claims the Model S sedan will be produced at a rate of 20,000 units per year, with an expected 3rd quarter of 2011 start of production and an expectation of mid-2012 for when they hope to hit that 20,000-per-year number.


The Tesla Model S Sedan will supposedly have a 300 mile range from its floor pan-located, easily removable battery pack which Tesla claims will have a quick-charged capability allowing it to partially charge in just 45 minutes. The company is considering renting customers a long range battery pack for long trips. The regular batteries are available for lease and are expected to last from 7 to 10 years depending on use, but expect closer to 10 for normal use. The entire car will be covered under a warranty, the length of which is expected to be between 3 and 4 years.

The interior features 2 LCD screens, one displaying the gauges and one mounted centrally featuring a full touch screen. Seating has five seats facing forward with two seats folded down into the trunk space that flip upward and face out the back of the Model S. We don't have pictures of it, but Elon Musk tells us it's true so it must be.

Sport and AWD models are being planned, but the stock model can run 0-60 MPH in 5.5 seconds using its single-speed transmission.

The Tesla Model S will be built in Southern California, while the drive train is manufactured in San Jose. Although we initially believed they might be using a Mercedes platform, but we're now told personally by Tesla's Elon Musk the platform is their own design and they plan on manufacturing it themselves. Where they'll come up with the tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars necessary to accomplish that is anyone's guess.
What is interesting is that the dash has a giant screen (touch screen?). I have to say it does look a lot like the Jaguar XF.
 
The looks are not bad. Nothing extraordinary, just modern, but good-looking. The side/rear view reminds me of the current Passat somehow, I think it's the rear lights. Rear-facing seats in the boot? I'm sceptical about the head room for the people sitting there...

However, still need for batteries capable of recharging (almost) as quick as an ordinary fuel stop, if you want to use an electrical car long-distance. Renting a "long-range battery pack", yeah, sure...
 
Looks like a Maselati. I'll wait until they actually get off the ground before booking a flight.

I would assume that they're for tail gating, not for sitting in while it's driving.

Pretty good looking car. I would wait until they get betterer batteries though.
 
So this is the car that Tesla is suing Fisker for. I wonder how similar this car is to the one Fisker designed for them.

Edit: From what I read it will under cut the Fisker Karma by about $20K.

I think that's a very good looking car. I sure wouldn't mind driving it.

It's been a long and difficult road, but Tesla Motors has made it to unveiling No. 2. After a lot of hype and delivery of 250 Tesla Roadsters, the company's Model S was unveiled today in Hawthorne, California. Tesla was incredibly careful about not leaking a lot of information before today ? designing the Model S at a high-security rocket facility helped with that, but we still got a peek a few hours ago ? and now that it's here, we love what we see.

We have just listened to the panjandrum Elon Musk and the car's designer speak about the new Tesla S sedan, and these are the things to know about the first mass-produced highway-capable electric car: production will ramp up to 20,000 units annually by the end of the first year of production; after the $7,500 tax break, the Model S will start at just under $50,000 ? $49,900 to be exact; and 440-volt charging will be available. That base price is for the 160-mile range pack; a 230-mile range pack and a 300-mile range pack will also be available.

Some other fast facts:

* The car fits seven people and their luggage: five adults and two children in rear-facing seats under the hatch inside, with luggage in the boot up front.
* If not people, it can fit a mountain bike with its wheels still on, a surfboard and a 50-inch television at the same time.
* The dashboard screens were installed to rid the interior of buttons. The 17-inch main display is fully 3G and Internet capable.
* The 300-mile range is possible (vs the Roadster's 244-mile range) because the S has 8,000 battery cells vs. 6,000 in the Roadster, the batteries have been improved in mass and volumetric performance, and there is more advanced cell chemistry in each cell, and the S has a cd of about .27 vs. the Roadster's drag coefficient of .35.
* On a 220V outlet, the car can be recharged in 4 hours.
* Option packages are being decided, with the only initial option being the battery pack. Customers will also be able to buy the 160-mile pack and rent the long range pack for a trip.
* They are finalizing the warranty, and expect it to be 3-4 years for the car and 7-10 years for the battery pack. They expect replacement battery packs to come in at "well under $5000" according to Elon.
* The quickness: the standard S will get to 60 in 5.5 to 6.0 seconds. A coming sport version will get to 60 in "well under five seconds," Musk says.
* The car will get a single-speed transmission.
* The body panels and chassis will be primarily aluminum, with a total weight of just over 4,000 pounds, about 1,200 pounds of that being battery mass.
* For infrastructure, Tesla is working with a government-affiliated partner to set up battery changing stations at various locations. They will be able to change the battery in 5-8 minutes, "quicker than filling up your car with gas."

According to Tesla's numbers, buying a Tesla S will save you $10-$15K vs a comparably priced gas-powered sedan when gas is $4 per gallon. For an equivalent comparison, you'd have to lease a $35,000 gas-powered car. The biggest hitch: the car doesn't go into production until Q3 of 2011.

It certainly looks fantastic - I only hope the range / recharge-times are close to what they claim they are.
 
Looks to me what the Jaguar XF should have been. Very sleek and sexy!
 
And the Electric engine is really very suitable for this kind of car. Very quick, yet very quiet. In many ways a very attractive car.

Couldn't they get their two-speed gearbox to work? The relatively low top-speed seems slightly anti-climatic if you were for instance to get a chance to drive on the german autobahns :)
 
Seven seats how? I dunno how you could fit seven people in here. Maybe volvo v70 style rear-facing fold out seats behind the liftgate?

So the kids in the back sit back-to-back with the people in the 'standard' rear seat, and look out the back window.
 
Looking at that starting price I'll have to give that car some serious cnsderation to purchase in the next few years

The back looks much better than the skirt-lift they showed us a couple of months ago.

You can definitely see some of the Mazda designers influence in this car, especially the front.

I want this car so badly. :p

I've ridden in a Tesla Roadster, and am excited about this one. I just with the economy didn't take suck a giant steaming crap, or else I'd be offering to work for them (their headquarters are just 15 minutes away, and one of their dealerships is only another 2-3 minutes further) doing...well...anything, really.
 
Very good looking in profile and rear 3/4 view. I agree that the front does have a slight "over-bite" look to it, but overall a car I wouldn't mind being seen in.

4 hr. recharge time isn't bad! I remember hearing on NPR that they've figured out how to get batteries to charge in seconds to minutes (depending on size) but now they have to figure out how to get them to discharge slowly (apparently the batteries "blow their nut" just as fast as they recharge) so they're safe to use.
 
One thing, too...the 5-minute swap. If you don't/can't charge at home, one of the features this car has it the ability to swap the batteries. Think of the batteries like a propane tank for your gas BBQ. Some places might refill them, but typically you drop off an empty tank, and pick up a full one. That's how these work. You pull into a swap station, a arm goe sunder the car and grabbes the battery, and replaces it within 5 minutes. The nice thing about that system, is that as batteries improve, and newer-tech batteries filter into these "stations", the performance and efficiency of the entire local fleet is improved...something you can't do with an ICE car.

Does anyone know if this format is something that other manufacturers are working on to make a standardized set-up?

I don't buy the claimed 4 hours recharge time on a standard outlet. Independently of the battery pack, this plug just doesn't give you enough power to fully charge such a battery pack in that time. I like the 5-minute-swap idea, everything else is just BS.
 
Well it's only the first real generation of electric cars, pretty sure over a few years not only they will be able to drop the price to $35k, so that will be the bargain of the century, also i'd love to see the electric Jazz-like family 4 seater with a big boot.

All in all this thing looks like a Lexus and it's greener than salary so there will be a lot of "Smug" around it, even more than around Prius.
