Annual Royal Air Force competition

The other day China announced the first flight of their new stealth fighter aircraft.

So, how many years was the US supposed to dominate with a couple F-22s before anyone caught up?

And, in a similar vein, another new fighter from a BRIC country.

BBC News ? Fit to fly: The Tejas, first made-in-India fighter jet

BBC News said:
India's first fighter jet, the Tejas, has been declared fit to fly - 26 years after it was first conceived.

The defence minister announced in Bangalore that the supersonic jet had won initial operational clearance.

The Tejas, meaning radiant, is expected to replace the ageing fleet of Russian MIG-21s.

The Indian Air Force has already placed orders with government-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, India's sole aircraft maker, for 40 of the jets.

The first 20-strong squadron of the light combat aircraft is expected to be inducted by 2012-13.

Shouldn?t that name have been trademarked by Texas? :p

Is it based on the Russian/Indian T-50?

And the YF-22 had its first flight in 1990, so it took 'em 20 years. It's congress's fault for getting the F-22 stuck in cutback hell.

Maybe Russia and China's recent announcements will be good for the F-22 (and its successor) after all.

I thought that was an Su-47 Berkut at first... lol.

That chinese stealth plane(supposedly PS...but doubt it) has been making quite the noise on the military discussion forums and all the sino-asian defence blogs....It looks to be legit with all the pictures.

Its not based on the Sukhoi/HAL T-50 project the Russians and Indians are working on, something more indigenous. Looks to be competing with the T-50 and F-22 and seems to have some design elements of the F-22(Nose), S-47(tail area)....

About the HAL Tejas...FINALLY its cleared for IOC. Wont be until 2013 where a full squadron will be up and running and only when the Mk 2 Tejas comes to production we will see the locally developed Kaveri engine and also radar.

That confused the hell of out me until I looked that plane up. I thought the engines were a part of the main wings (built-in). Crazy Interesting having four engines on the tail like that though.

The new Chinese stealth / 5th generation fighter reminds me of a cross between the Russian planes and both F-22 and YF-23 (badass nickname too).

I don't know why I've always loved the Jet Star.

I don't know why I've always loved the Jet Star.

For me it was its appearance in Goldfinger. That, and there just aren't enough four-engined planes with the engines in the back. It, the VC10, and some Soviet-era transport are all I can think of.

From memory it was 4 engined because the original engines Lockheed wanted to use just didn't have enough performance, so they simply put another 2 on

Here's a nice bit of kit:

Can anyone identify this location?
(I mean KaJun or anyone else who knows the place well. :p)

From the aircraft shown, I would think it is the Presidential Gallery at the USAF Museum in Wright-Patterson, AFB Ohio. (Unfortunately, during my visit there, the Presidential Gallery was closed to the public.)

I  JetStars too.

:)

That's what I was thinking. Engines of that era just didn't have enough thrust. Now days they'd just make them bigger engines. :)

Lockheed L1011 was three - the VC10 was 4 I think you will find. L1011 may have had a take off assist in some versions but I do not think so.

Edit/ That HAL Tejas reminds me of an old Dassult somewhat.
